Lions write history

Lions,

We had a very busy weekend with two Cup finals and two closing tournaments!

[SIFL Cup] Shanghai Lions 2-1 ReUnited

We will remember our road to the finals as in the quarters we barely had a squad against Voodoo but we pulled it off with a lot of new players and a goal by Jack. The semi final versus Shooters was our best game of the season. We crushed them with total football 3-0 !

The final versus ReUnited was a different game they had their fast three African players trying to cause havoc to our defense. It cost Jerome his hamstring but luckily we had Fabi in stand by. The key for this game was to score first as we don’t wanted to open up for their counter attacks. It happened with a crazy 30m (at least) shot from Zohan in the top left corner. All looked good until they equalized by slicing thru our defense. Suddenly our heads went down and we started to play bad. God bless we made it to half time to think it over and 45 minutes left to write history !

Second half we were better created several chances but failed to score….! Two heroic saves of Francois our stand in goalie kept us in the race. We got our reward in the 89th minute for our never give up mentality. Before we knew it there was a mountain of Lion Players on the field we almost crushed Johnny in the pile up but all survived ! Kevin couldn’t get enough and let play for another 6 minutes ! Final whistle and time to party !

[SPL Cup] Hawks 1-0 Shanghai Lions

Very hard opponent all the good and fast Chinese players combined with a few Brazilians. The Lions played their best game of the season helped by Nicolas our goalie who came over from Singapore.

Especially the first half we controlled the game by a good passing game. In this tight game it was obvious that the game could be decided by one goal only. In the second half the hawks got their goal on the break slicing thru our left defense. We knew it was very tough to come back but we never gave up both Charles and Jeff out of all people had a good chance for the equalizer. We lacked the firing power upfront.

Joel next season make sure to play a final and book your long holiday accordingly ! In a final you need that little extra to win you can call it luck if you want!

The season 2011/2012 is over and we can conclude that it was very active Lions year with many positives to report:

  • SIFL 3rd place
  • Hebiguchi Cup semi final
  • SIFL Cup winner
  • Closing Tournament finalist
  • SPL 3rd place
  • SPL Cup finalist
  • SPL Closing tournament finalist

Our target and aim is to do better next season as that will give us more silverware and titles! We are very pleased with the start of the Young Lions team and the expansion of our Lions family with new players thru out the season. Hope we can keep our positive spirit for a long time and that each player enjoy to be Lion.

It’s essential that our senior players pass on their experience to the younger ones because they will be our Lions future.

Enjoy the break and if you stay in Shanghai keep training and play in our own 7-a-side tournament every Wed from June 27th to Aug. 15th with 6 other teams!

Cheers
Lions Management

[SPL News] A great season 9 of SPL ends

Amigo’s and Amiga’s,

All good things come to an end ! We had our last 4 league games of the season last Sunday and can now take a look at the final ranking !

10) Galacticos – They had a few key players leaving at the end of last season and found it difficult to field a consistent squad during this season. Credit to them that they still kept trying until the very last game to try to turn things around. I am sure next season they will be good !

9) Super 48 – They hired a new coach (its said he get more paid than Mourinho) and we must admit he did wonders. They picked up their first red card ever and even several yellows this was a signal that they were up for business this season. Famous for their blue wall and their heavy smoking goalkeepers they are an asset to our league. Their strategy is to end every year one place higher so by 2022 they will be SPL Champion and called Super 58 !

8) Cowboys – Their first SPL season and for them it was learning to get used to the level and more physical game of our league. They scored 41 goals which is a lot but the 88 goals they conceded is something they need to work on next season. We are happy they became part of the SPL Family !

7) Japan – They had a “rollercoaster” season. Good games followed by Bad games, Lucky games followed by Unlucky games and an 11 player squad followed by a 38 player squad. In the end the roller coaster stopped somewhere in the middle. Highlight was Yamada-san’s goal which makes him the oldest SPL player to score (62) !

6) Flamenkos – Last year’s runner up but this year in the middle of the pack ! Yes they lost their best player as he went back to Madrid but they had some very good games this season versus the Lions and Hard Days Night. Closer to the end of the season they were running low on players which cost them several points. Something to work on over the summer recruiting young and talented players !

5) Pistolera Bulls – The had a good run early in the season. Especially with Nils their German top scorer in fine form. Scoring 71 goals is a Bulls SPL record but to concede 71 goals is also a Bulls SPL record. Bulls games are always entertaining due to their 2-3-5 formation. Bilgin will prove with his statistics that when he is not there they lack leadership and are most of the time defeated !

4) ERS – Fantastic season for the French. Highest SPL ranking for them and a very good balanced team ! They conceded the least goals only 27 !   The team was very well organized and they way they are going I am sure they can snatch a top 3 spot next season !

3) Lions – Not a bad season but with only 61 goals scored it showed they lacked firing power upfront. Just one point short of being second. The Lions are in a transition period where the older player are gently asked to play less and they young Lions will get more playing time ! Good for the SPL to see that the Lions are not unbeatable in the end !

2) Hard Days Night – Their best season and fully deserved to be in this position ! Last year seventh and this year second ! They had the right formula to be successful as a football team. A good management, young and talented players combined with old and experienced player,a good fair fighting spirit,a great sponsor and even a fan base every game ! Peter picked up the SPL top scorer award with 20 goals and meanwhile HDN picked up the “most cards” award which has been going to Bilgin’s squad for many years in a row.

1)Hawks – SPL Champions ! They scored the most goals 90 !  They lost just two game and used the most players ! Their top scorer scored only 8 goals and the other 82 goals were scored by the other 28 players. We do hope that next season they will have a more consistent team.

All in all a great SPL Season with no incidents except for the “unlucky” Mus ! All games were played in a fair and friendly spirit ! I have deep respect for the referees and Kevin and his team as they never ever let us down and take on the hard job to be a referee ! Great Job by all the Captains to get the teams out every week as I know how hard it is to receive all the text messages on Sunday Morning. Not a single game was forfeited which is very positive ! We thank Yamada for keeping the score and Frederik for keeping our website alive ! Adam our grass master, great great pitch again ! Thanks to Dulwich School and Waigaxiao for renting us the fields and Golden Bridge Company the developer of Green City a big fan of the SPL ! Of course to all the players of the SPL you made this season a success !

We still have two weeks of SPL entertainment this Sunday SPL semi Cup-Finals :

  • 1000-1200 Flamenkos – Hawks
  • 1200-1400 Hard Days Night – Lions

Sunday June 17th, 2012:

  •  930 -1130  SPL Cup Final
  • 1200-1630  SPL Closing Tournament
  • 1700-late    SPL Party at Latina + Price ceremony !

Enjoy the Euro 2012 and the final games of the SPL!

Cheers

Lions end both Leagues with a win

Lions,

The league is over and its not yet time to look back as we still have a very important SIFL Cup final + SPL semi final to play !

[SIFL] Shanghai Lions FC 3-2 Shanghai Krauts FC

Saturday we played the Germans and it could have been an easy game for us if we would have scored the chances we created but…….we liked to make it difficult for ourselves.

Losing 2-1 at half time we got 45 minutes left to turn it around. At least we showed fighting spirit and got all three points with a 2-3 win most likely putting us third in the ranking this season / we scored 66 goals and conceded 26 goals here lays part of our problem as both the Shooters and the Azzurri scored 89 and 85 goals respectively. We are masters in creating opportunities but masters as well in wasting them…….! Of the conceded goals half were gifts from our side ! Surely we can do better next season and we need to work hard to fix our problems.

[SPL] Shanghai Lions  – Flamenkos

Sunday we had a fun day as 21 Lions turned up for the last game of the season ! Third place was already secured and that’s our lowest ranking ever. We can put it into perspective we won 12 games lost 4 and drew 2 scored 61 goals (bad) and conceded 28 goals (good) we were just one point behind Hard Days Night and taking Mus incident vs Cowboys into consideration we should have been second ! Fact is that Hawks and Hard Days Night scored more goals 90 and 83 respectively ! Last season we lost 3 games and drew 1 scored 66 goals and conceded 25 and we were Champions !

We had Joel scoring his 16th of the season, Garret his first of the season and Terao his first goal in China. On top our 17 year old youngster Martin netted two goals as well. 6-0 win I forgot the other goals scorer…..! We as well had our youngest Lion ever making his debut, Alex 14 years old ! Need to keep track of all the youngest scoring Lions records ! The oldest scoring Lion is Freek (48) we hope one day you will break that record !

We have a massive game next Sunday at 12;00 vs Hard Day Night for SPL Semi-Cup final. We will put a strong Lions team out there and make it to the final on the 17th !

We as well entered a Shanghai Football Organization 11 aside Summer Tournament ! We will give you more info later !

Cheers
Freek
