SPL is ready for the year of the Horse !

Amigo’s and Amiga’s,

We have to say good bye to the year of the snake and welcome the year of the horse ! We consulted with a well known feng shui master to give us some insight what to expect in the year of the horse and whether there is any impact on the SPL !

There will be bush fires running out of control in Indonesia, Philippines, Tasmania, Australia and New Zealand there are not much bushes left in China so we should be ok !

2014 will produce extreme hot weather it will bring natural disasters. The year of the horse 2014 has only 3 dragons producing water out of the total 12 dragons who can produce water. We do expect less rainfall in 2014 which is good for the SPL as we can play more not so good for the our grass master of course !

In the year of the horse sometimes kindness will be transformed into anger. There will be more protests, riots, clashes, conflicts, explosions, gun fire. I have notified the referees all ready to keep all the clashes under control.

In the year of the horse there are more liver and heart related issues. The master advise everybody to exercise more which is good news for the SPL !

The horse was our way of transport in the past and now has been replaced by the car. The car industry will have hard time this year. Guess that’s not bad as there way too many cars in China back to the bicycle everybody ! The Horse will clash with the Rat this year and companies which have logo’s that look like a rat will have difficulties, Micky mouse and Qantas can be in trouble, god bless our logo has the pearl tower !

With the world cup around the corner we are pretty sure it will be a fantastic football year !

We had our 6 last games in the year of the snake :

Japan – Cowboys 5-12 Very strange game in the first half Japan fielded the old and experience players but got smashed 0-11 that’s a goal every 4 minutes !! In the second half the Cowboys took it easy and let the older player play and the Japanese switch the younger ones. The second half Japan won 5-1 !

Marlins – Lions 3-5 Big game which turned out to be a fierce battle with players giving it all for 90 minutes ! Lions took the lead by a long range shot of Adam but the Marlins equalized right before half time with a header from a corner. In the second half the Lions took the lead again on a fast counter attack. The marlins didn’t give up here and got a penalty awarded which they converted to equalize. Adam scored his hat-trick to give the lions the lead for the third time and soon after the Lions took control by scoring two more goals. Another penalty for the Marlins made the final score 3-5.

Super 48 – Flamenkos 2-3 A close encounter mainly due to the fact the Super 48 is an improved side this season. First half was 1-0 for Super 48 but the Flamenkos eager to get win proved to be more clinical in front of the goal and took all three points !

Gremio – ERS 3-1 Early in the game ERS got some opportunities but failed to take them and as it most of the time goes in football the other team would score. Gremio did that and scored three goals by Zhubiao and Kercio. In the second half Gremio controlled the game to keep the points but ERS managed to get a goal back but had no power left for more goals.

Galacticos – Shanghai 2000 0-5 This time a real game of football on a great venue. Both teams eager to get a win but Shanghai 2000 proved to be fitter on the day and took the three points.

SFL FC – Pistolera Bulls 4-6 Bulls started strong as they are on a good SPL run and played with confidence. They took a easy 0-4 lead and SFL FC pulled on back thru a penalty. In the second half SFL pushed for a result and came back to 3-4 however the Bulls had no problem to keep scoring and kept the three points for themselves. Another high-light was the fact that Bilgin’s son was watching his father play (see picture) for the first time and right in front of him he collected his yellow card. It looks like the legacy of the yellow cards will stay in the family as his son is smarter than his father and a fast learner !

On February the 16th we have 6 games :

1200-1400 Lions – Pistoler Bulls at Jinqiao

1400-1600 SFL FC – Galacticos at Jinqiao

1200-1400 Gremio – Japan at WGQ

1200-1400 ERS – Flamenkos at WGQ

1400-1600 Marlins – Super 48 at WGQ

1300-1500 Shanghai 2000 – Cowboys at Century Park

Please keep in mind that we cannot accept request for postponements anymore.

Enjoy the break and see you all in the year of the horse !

Cheers Freek / SPL President on behalf of the SPL Committee !

“Youth Lions” win the first ever Lions FUTSAL Tournament !

We as a club are always looking for more opportunities to play football. Charles our vice president came up with the idea to organize a futsal tournament. He together with Azz managed to find the venue of the official home ground of the Shanghai Futsal club who are playing in the Chinese National Competition. Of course in winter time futsal is a great way to stay fit and with more and more pollution concerns nowadays it can be a part of our trainings.

The venue was great and we had two Lions youth teams and two Japanese teams (Japan FC and Super 48) plus our own veterans battling it out ! after 4 group games for each team we got a semi final Young Lions A vs Young Lions B. Young Lions A were sharp on the counter and won by 3-0. The other finalist would come from the winner of Japan  vs Lions Veterans. It ended 0-0 so the decision would be made by one on one, great entertainment as a few players slipped and missed and a few players scored, in the end the penalty of our President (a chip over the helpless Japanese keeper) and Adam (low shot in the corner) gave us the edge. So it was an all Lions final. The youngster played well and took home the gold medal. All in All a great experience and everybody enjoyed it ! Sure we will organize more Lions events like that !

Cheers Freek

Lions never give up !

We had our last game on Saturday before the Chinese New Year and our opponent was DIB ! The semi professional side from Shanghai was trailing us by three points before this game after we had beaten them in the first game of the season 1-0. We wanted to get a result out of this game to keep the championship in our own hand. With no Azz and Simon we knew we had to step up our game and preparation in order to do so !

It started with the poker night on Friday at Charles home ground ! Great way for team building before a game and according to “Le Patron” all Lions were drinking water and nothing else. Next positive was that all the Lions arrived way early before the game and helped by the great weather their spirit was lifted soon.

Tactics were discussed and key to this game was to defend from the top to bottom and never give them space for a counter attack which could be deadly against DIB. In between I told Chris who had been troubled with injury most of last season that we needed him for 90 minutes today and I referred to the fact that our team spirit should give us the edge over DIB and last but not least I asked the senior players to step up and give the extra’s needed today to get a result.

In the first half we played very disciplined and everybody worked very hard to make sure we didn’t concede. Remy our Captain blocked two shot from the line just a confirmation how focused we were not to concede a goal. We got a few good breaks and came close to scoring a few times. DIB were on three yellows at half time which was another important aspect in such a close encounter.

Nil-Nil at half time was a good result and we continued to play the same tactics in the second half. All looked fine as  we controlled most of the possession but 20 minutes before the end disaster struck as the DIB striker in between three Lions suddenly turned and found himself free in front of the goal and didn’t miss ! For 5 minutes all players heads were down as we didn’t expect them to score while we had been defending so well throughout the game ! Benji not match fit for the game due to injury gave it all but for the final 15 minutes I asked whether Francois our veteran could play in Benji’s role, sure was his reply as his father was watching the game ! The Lions started to fight in the last 10 minutes and gave everything in their heart and soul to score a goal. First a corner and a great header by BIG John almost got us the goal, seconds later a super cross from Fabie found Romain who couldn’t convert it, another great cross from Chris found Romain who volleyed the ball straight and if it would have gone in it would have been goal of the year but the DIB keeper saved it ! Another corner in the last  minutes and all Lions went up even Dimitri our keeper went up.  In the very last minute another corner and Francois who remembered our pre-game talk that somebody needed to be on the DIB goalie so he did and when Chris  (he lasted 94 minutes) corner came flying in one meter away from the DIB goalie he  knew before his header that he would score !

Unbelievable fighting spirit from all the Lions  and a well deserved result which puts us back on top of the SIFL ! For us this draw is like a win and for DIB this draw is like a loss !

Let’s stay focused and work hard over the Chinese New Year to stay fit and sharp for the second half of the season !

If you are in Shanghai during the Chinese New Year pls come the training as the Lions never stop playing ! Next up is DIB in the Cup game on the 15th !

Cheers Happy Freek

Fantastic week for the Lions !

Great week for the Lions !

First on Thursday we picked up our 4th consecutive “Shanghai Sport Team of the Year” award. This award is for all Lions and Lions supporters and a recognition of our hard work and achievements in 2013 !

On Saturday we played Japan and within 5 minutes we were punished for our slow start and lack of focus. Japan took the lead but after that we woke up and scored 5 goals. Its good to see that our defenders keep scoring goals both Jack and John scored and even Charles managed to get on the scoresheet ! The second half we agreed to work on our goal difference but instead Japan got a penalty and the final score was 5-2.

On Sunday it was the big game versus the Marlins and the stage was set for a tense battle. We scored within 5 minutes by a great goal of Adam this took some heat out of the Marlins. We started to play real good football and dominated the midfield. All the Marlins got were corners and they proved to be dangerous. Five minutes before half time they got a header in from a corner and Thomas thought he cleared it from the line but Kevin had a different view. At half time we agreed to keep our cool whatever decision would go against us and our nerves were tested to the limits !

We scored 2-1 right after the break with another great strike of Adam who obvious was on fire playing the British ! Kevin awarded the Marlins a cheap penalty which they scored but even that didn’t help the Marlins as Adam again scored right after ! Big John thought enough is enough and started a turbo run from to back to the front to finish it with a low strike in the corner and Charles made it 5-2 for the Lions. Another penalty was awarded to the disbelieve of all Lions but we kept our cool and took home the 3 points. We showed great mental strength and scored fantastic goals and we are looking forward to the second half of the season after we won all our first 11 games !

After the game it was well deserved beer time at Latina. We sadly had to say goodbye to Adam and Thomas who are moving back to England and Malaysia. Great Lions and we thank them for their contribution of our most successful season last year.

One more massive game this Saturday against DIB and we hope to see everybody come and support us during this game !

Very Very Happy Freek

LIONS Management

Lions keep winning also in 2014 !

We had a 9.00 AM game right after the new year holiday on Saturday ! Experience tells us that it was asking for trouble. Leagues and Championships are won in those periods where the team is thin and it boils down to character and fighting spirit of the players. When I arrived we had only 9 players and soon I found out that I had to play a full 90 minutes game ! With no subs and the manager in the squad we started the game. Within 5 minutes there was a good combination in the midfield ending in the feet of the manager who showed some dutch master skills as he cleverly assited the ball to Romain who scored the 1-0. The Lions tried not to give away too much and tried to stay injury free to end the game with 11 players. First half ended 1-0 but in the second half disaster stroke as we failed to clear the ball in our own box and United happily scored the equalizer. With ten minutes to go the Lions went all out to correct the score lead by Benji man of the match who bombarded the goal of United. However their massive goalie proved to be going for the man of the match title as well. As he saved several shots. However in the last minutes there was a controversy as the United goalie catched a corner fm Benji not realizing he was standing in the goal and when he took the ball to his chest the referee had no choice but to give the goal ! It was a good example of Champions Luck but we enjoyed the goal celebration afterwards for sure !

On Sunday we had so many french people in Jinqiao it felt like we were playing at the parc des princes ! Our opponent were ERS our French friends. A win was a must to stay in the title race and it would be our 10th consecutive win of the season. We scored a beauty by Joel headers only to see the goal being disallowed by the lines men who had no clue about what I means to be off-side. Angered by this Joel hammered the ball in the top corner 5 minutes later after a fine cross from Nicolas. 1-0 half time and obvious if we could keep a clean sheet we won the game ! That’s what we did next week we have a key game versus the Marlins !

Obvious everybody need to come to the training to get back into fitness and furthermore we expect all the Lions to attend the That’s magazine Sports award evening this coming Thursday  in the Camel bar where we are in the running for the “Best Sport Team of the Year” award. It will be a good time to show the other sporters in Shanghai “Who We Are” and have a few beers together ! It starts at 2000 PM.

Cheers Freek
