Lions stay on course

[ SIFL ] Shanghai Lions 2-0 Azzurri FC

On Saturday we were playing vs the Azzurri and it’s always a though game because they play same style as us. After losing some of their games early season, they are now back in shape and didn’t lose for a while. Dimitri Le Sant, our goalie, came straight from Pudong Airport and arrived WGQ at 6:00 am loaded with his suitcase (see picture attached). Fabien Barbet was out injured and top player, Benjamin Guerin, realized after 5 minutes that it was enough due to a hamstring injury… We struggled in the beginning of the game mainly because Azzurri decided to stay deep and the result was an overstretched midfield with many gaps…
In the first half Azzurri came the closest to score when Adam Kluger got away from Jack Boller and hit the wood work. The half time talk was not pretty and a few hard words were needed to stress the importance of this game. We had 45 minutes to turn the game around and that’s what we did. We started to control the midfield and created chances. It was Jack Boller who scored from a corner and this season our defenders prove to be our secret weapons as goal scorers! Azzurri tried to fight back but after too many substitutions they lost their play. Azzeddine Takouloufa went on a run and scored the decisive goal 2-0. Important result to stay on track for the title race!

On Sunday we played the Galacticos who have not won a game yet. It was important to work on the goal difference and that’s just what we did ! A 9-0 win and happy to see that our Young U17 Lions Sean got on the score sheet twice. Now that was our 13th consecutive win of this season and it keeps us on top of the SPL.

Good weekend with good results. However we are going in to the decisive months of the title race and in the end it will boil down on the commitment and the hunger for the title. Small details start to matter and a slip up can be deadly. As well we have a few injured players who need to take care of themselves and look for treatment and a recovery plan. Now it’s the time to all attend the trainings and work hard towards the end of the season ! Plan your holidays / business trips so that you don’t miss important games !

Looking forward to next weekend !

SPL is on track !

Amigo’s and Amiga’s,

We have no complain about the weather gods this season. It seems on Sundays we miss the rains often or just get a little like last Sunday. Sofar no cancelations which is helping our schedule and its good to see that we over the first half. We had an unfortunate incident on the Dulwich field as Sport for Life’s Dave Cummings broke his leg with a blocking tackle. It was good to hear that everybody did their best help Dave and the ambulance arrived within 18 minutes. Dave will be out for several months and we do wish him a speedy recovery on behalf of everybody in the SPL !

Lions – Pistolera Bulls 4-1 Bilgin overslept but not sure that was the reason the Bulls took and early lead after 5 minutes. The wake up call was made and the Lions started to counter attack. Not without success as twice the scored with a header on the break. It was 2-1 at half time and the Bulls smelled an opportunity. They got a golden opportunity to equalize but stand in Lions goalie Francois saved from close range. As it goes in football if you don’t convert the opponent will do so and that’s what the Lions did by scoring two free kicks.

SFL FC – Galacticos 5-0 All the goals were in the first half and all scored by 5 different SFL players.  Galacticos is still in the process of rebuilding the team and we have confidence they will get there.

Gremio – Japan 4-3 Interesting game as Gremio took a comfortable 3-0 lead in the first half. They even added a fourth goal in the second half but with 15 minutes to go Japan hit the turbo button and increased the speed of play. Gremio was getting tired and conceded 3 goals. God bless the referee blow the whistle for Gremio as Mika commented later that if the game would have lasted another 5 minutes surely Japan would have equalized !

ERS – Flamenkos 0-4 The final result kept one side happy and one side unhappy. ERS commented that everything went wrong what could go wrong during a game.

Marlins – Super 48 9-1 The first half saw only two goals from the Marlins and the culprit was the Giant Super 48 goalie who had a superb half. In the second half there was no more blue wall and helped by Fedja who scored 4 and our own Grass Master Adam who scored his first goal for the Marlins they walked over the Super 48’s.

Shanghai 2000 – Cowboys 1-7 The game was decided in the first 20 minutes as the Cowboys were simply too fast and too decisive in front of the goal. It was 6-0 at half time but the Shanghai 2000 players and coach were happy with the second half performance as that ended in 1-1 !

On a positive note we can report that all games were played in friendly spirit and only a few yellow cards were needed during the games. Lets keep it this way and enjoy our games on Sunday ! We have another 6 games round this coming Sunday and the weather forecast is good and we might even have double digit temperatures !

1200-1400 SFL FC – Flamenkos at Jinqiao

1400-1600 Pistolera Bulls – Marlins at Jinqiao

1200-1400 Cowboys – ERS at WGQ

1200-1400 Gremio – Super 48 at WGQ

1400-1600 Lions – Galacticos at WGQ

1200-1400 Shanghai 2000 – Japan at Century Park

Enjoy football in Shanghai ! Cheers Freek / SPl President on behalf of the SPL Committee !

Mixed ressults for the Lions this weekend

On Saturday we faced the DIB for the third time this year for the quarter final of the SIFL Cup. Whenever we play them we know it will be a very close game and we need to be 100 pct focused to get a result. It was good to see Max our goal keeper back in Shanghai and early in the game he made sure we kept a clean sheet. We got some good opportunities on the breaks and Charles came closest when his volley hit the woodwork. Nil-nil at half time and in the second half we took more possession and started to play better football. The reward came 15 minutes before the end by an excellent goal started on the left by Azzeddine who found Benji and he decided to take three DIB players on at once and crossed the ball in and out of nowhere came Francois our right back to slot home the 1-0. Straight after we got a great opportunity to make it 2-0 by a header of Azzeddine. The way the game developed we knew it will not be easy for DIB to score but as it goes in football things can change. An unfortunate drop of the ball by Max our goalie landed straight in the feet of Didier who score from close range, 1-1. Moments later a deflected cross fell again straight in the feet of the DIB striker and the game was upside down. This time there was no turn around in the game. Losing is part of the game and it will make us stronger.  It was good to see all Lions staying back for a beer and some fun with our New Dutch player who gave a live performance at WGQ!

Next up are the Azzurri and obvious that is  a massive league game for us !

On Sunday we faced the Bulls who for the occasion had a few Azzurri players on loan. The Bulls won their last 8 games and we knew it wouldn’t be a walk over. After two minutes they scored ! Call it a wake up call ! After that we started to play some good football and were very dangerous on the counter attacks. Twice Matthieu scored with a header and we could haves score a few more goals. In the second half stand in goalie Francois saved us twice as the Bulls got a clear scoring opportunity!

After Big John showed us in the first half how not to take a free kick and Yosh followed on this it was out of all people Simon who scored from a free kick. Soon after it was Dave’s turn and he smashed the ball in the top corner! 4-1 a good result and a good lions performance! Next up are the Galacticos and of course we need to continue our unbeaten run.

In the pooring rain we had a special training session by Azzeddine for our young Lions and a turn out of 13 boys was good given that some couldn’t make due to tournament commitments. The boys had fun and learned a lot. This is a good example of the strength of the Lions as all the training we organize are done by the best people we have in our own club. Great way to end the weekend !

We expect everybody to come to the training on Wednesday and we all look forward to the weekend already !

Big weekend ahead for the Lions !

Welcome back ! It was interesting to follow the Lions holiday activities on We Chat ! From surfing to skiing and fishing. Of course the hard core Lions stayed in Shanghai and trained hard to improve themselves. Now the holiday is over and the year of the horse has arrived. The year of the horse stands for a powerful and energetic year and that combined with the Lions should give us a great year of football and friendship!

We have two important games this weekend and hope that all the Lions start with the right focus.

On Saturday we will face DIB for the third time this season and this time it’s the quarter final of the SIFL Cup. After we managed to keep the three point cushion in our favor with a 1-1 draw against them in the SIFL League just before the CNY we will have to kick them out of the Cup. We all know that Cup games are different and special. Most of the time the team with the strongest fighting spirit will take the win in a cup fight. No matter how the ranking is in the league. We need to show them that we are hungry for success this season and nothing better than to be motivated against DIB.

On Sunday we will play the Bulls. They have won 5 out of their last 7 games and will do “anything” to get a result out of this game. We should stay ahead and play one of our best games of the season and let the other teams drop points against the Bulls.

This should be enough motivation for all of you to come to the training and be ready for the big games of the weekend !

Cheers,

Freek BOELEN
