Lions open their season at la Creperie and beat Japan 5-0 !

We had a nice first Lions dinner at our new sponsor La Creperie, at their great location in Jing’an. Thomas the manager made sure that we enjoyed the set menu and the restaurant looked promising and great. We love sponsors who show interest in football and especially in the Lions. La Creperie is a young hard working group of passionate people and they try to make a footprint in the competitive Shanghai Restaurant market. Lets support each other and hopefully we can be more successful in the years ahead of us !

The food had a positive impacts on some of the Lions, as we had a very early game vs the Japanese the next day at 9 AM at SCSC WGQ. Usually, that would cause some trouble for the Lions but not this time. Our motivation was high so early in the season and our game plan was a solid win without conceding. Ahmet was our surprise factor scoring two goals and Azz, Romain and Patrick took one each to make 5 ! The Japanese came very close to scoring as they got a penalty awarded after a unjustified foul by Charles in the box, what a big mistake from the refereee…but Dim our goalie was motivated to stop the ball and so he did ! 5-0 final score !

Lions keep training especially during the October break as soon we will get the Shooters on our plate !

Lions end their unbeaten run in the SPL !

Amigo’s and Amiga’s,

It was good that we were able to manage two SPL rounds before the October holiday ! The break will be used to put the winter grass seeds in the field to make sure that in the spring we will play on a perfect pitch. With the Lions ending their winning streak it is already clear that this season will be a very interesting one. We can see that overall the teams look stronger this season and the battles are much closer than previous years.

Gremio – Super 48 9-2

The Gremio strikers seems to be in fine form early in the season. Super 48 scored their trade mark “first goal” early in the game. After that the Gremio strikers took control. It was 6-1 at half time and that was a good enough cushion for Gremio to swap some players. Super 48 never gave up and was still playing full attack mode and scored their second of the game. With Ailton scoring 4 and Francesco scoring 3 and Kercio 2 it ended 9-2

Marlins – Pistolera Bulls 2-0

A very close game with both team going for the win. For once the Marlins scored early in the game by target man Pete and from then onwards Bilgin’s men were on the hunt for the equalizer. Overall it resulted in a bunch of yellow cards in the first half and the Marlins went for the tea break with a 1-0 lead. In the second half the game was decided by two red cards for the Pisotolera Bulls and from than onwards it was Mission Impossible III to get something out of the game. The make matter worse James (from England !) hit a superb strike in the top corner to seal the faith for both teams. It was good to see both managers shake hands after the game and exchange a few words about the game.

Cowboys – AVL Galacticos 5-1 Galacticos did very well to held the Cowboys to 1-0 only at half time that’s a big improvement from last season. However in the second half the fitness level between the two teams made the difference. With Zhuang of the Cowboys in fine form scoring a hat-trick it was getting harder and harder for Vaughn’s men. The got one back by a converted penalty by David. There were no cards in this game which is as well a positive to mention !

Lions – Shanghai 2000 4-7 All good things come to an end and in this case it was the incredible undefeated SPL run of the Lions. Their run started in December 2012 and ended in this game. They were 33 games unbeaten in a row 30 wins and 3 draws a record they can be proud of ! However full credit goes to Shanghai 2000 who outplayed the Lions in the first 45 minutes at all fronts. Shanghai 2000 have a great mix of promising youngster with a few experienced players. In particular in this case their striker Nick Sudmann was the Lions Terminator scoring 5 goals in the first half. 6-1 was the first half score but in the second half the Lions did manage to regroup themselves by bringing in 3 U18 players and helped by their speed and movement managed to win the second half 1-3 but this time it was too late !

Flamenkos – Japan 3-2

It was the first game of the season for the Flamenkos but they looked sharp ! Japan still looking for their first win in their new red kit were ready for the battle as well. It was an excellent first half with both teams going for full attack much to the pleasure of the spectators at the Century Park. A 2-2 first half thriller was the result and in the second half the teams were more careful not to make a decisive mistake. In the end Andy of the Flamenkos scored the winner half way in the second half !

We have a two Sunday’s break which the SPL teams will use to up their fitness levels or heal their injuries and when we come back at October 12th we have 4 games on the SPL menu.

1200-1400 Lions – Super 48 at Waigaoqiao

1200-1400 Cowboys – Shanghai 2000 at Waigaoqiao

1300-1500 Gremio – ERS at Jinqiao

1500-1700 Marlins – Flamenkos at Jinqiao

Enjoy the break and come back fresh full of positive energy so that you can enjoy football in Shanghai and enjoy the SPL games !

Lions end their incredible unbeaten run in the SPL !

We always talk about making the most out of our stay in Shanghai and leaving a footprint behind. It’s time to open up about our historic unbeaten record run in the SPL we have always kept it among ourselves but finally it came to an end ! It all started on December 9 2012 where we lost against the Marlins everybody was down because we felt the win was ours but some arbitral decision were turning the game around. The rule says that you win as a team and lose as team so we ended up drinking beers in Latina and the players right there will remember exactly what we discussed. “If we win all our other games in the rest of the season we will be Champions” ! That’s what happened and last season the longest season in SPL history with 12 teams we didn’t lose a single game !

The official record is 33 SPL League games unbeaten in row !!! 30 wins and 3 draws !! Finally we can say that we are proud of this record and it’s time to thank all the Lions who have contributed to this incredible run ! Yes we should be proud and the biggest success factor has been our team spirit ! Week after week we were fighting for each other on the pitch and having beers after the games off the pitch !

It ended in the right way with a big loss versus Shanghai 2000 7-4. A well deserved win for them they are a very good promising side. All this will make the SPL more interesting this season with many improved teams.

After the game the hard core Lions ended up at Latina where it all began in 2012 and had a few beers and talked about the great memories but also talked about the new Lions 15/16 years old ready to play in the SPL. We are looking forward and want to make them better players than us so that they can set a new record later !

Records are there to be broken but this one we will try and keep for the Lions for a long time !

Proud to be a Lion ! Cheers Freek

SPL Sept. 21st 2014

Lions beat Azzuri 3-0 to kick off the SIFL season !

It’s important to start a new season well ! Before the game it didn’t look like that was going to happen because Jack our dream team selected defender took the speed train for the first time to be able to make it back from a business trip only to find out that he was in the wrong train heading towards Nanjing instead of Shanghai ! While we were doing the warming up we noticed Nicolas our left back was missing ! He arrived early  and his bag was still sitting on a chair at SCSC apparently he fell asleep at the sofa at the entrance of the Clubhouse !
Never mind our spirit was good and the Azzuri’s had the intention to score early in the game but we defended as team making it hard for them to get thru. We remembered our opener last season against DIB (1-0 win) and with one minute to go we got  free kick which Azz placed perfect in the left corner. Big John who will be out for a long period did well in his new role as assistant manager and was nice to see that our first goal of the season was celebrated for him and his recovery ! In the second half we dominated the game and we had some great counter attacks slicing through the Azzuri defends. Romain came very close to score a beauty but we left that to Azz after Danni who was on fire attracted three Azzuri defenders but managed to keep the ball and suddenly found Azz who wrong footed another two defenders and scored in the opposite corner ! The icing on the cake came from our substitutions Roberto our left winger finding Mathieu with a fine cross and he tipped it in the far corner ! A solid 3-0 win and a very good team performance !

Lets all train hard and keep this momentum early in the season !

Cheers Freek

2 brand new sponsors for season 2014/2015

We are very excited to announce 2 new sponsors for season 2014/2015:

La Creperie

La Creperie does indeed serve crepes. From hum-drum Nutella filled dough to the tangy seafood/salad crepe, main courses run the gamut. Some crepes are more successful than others, but the all wood decor, fully bar and English speaking servers make for a fine experience. The owner is not just a Brittany native, but the VP of the Brittany Association -- authenticity is as close you can get thousands of miles from the French coastline.

Tibet Glacial Water

In Tibet, the purest place in China, Nyainqntanglha Mountain, is revered by the Tibetans as a holy site.

Tibet Glacial Water is the glacial water flowing down from this ancient mountain
