Let’s enjoy this special Lions moment and hopefully with a great performance of the team on Sunday !
Without playing ourselves it was Japan who beat Scotland 3-0 that gave us a chance to clinch the title next week. On the wet pitch the Japanese players were too fast and too fit for the Scotland players. Scotland if they would have won the title race would have been over but now it all comes down to the last game of the season ! If we beat Scotland we will be Champion and if we tie Japan will be Champion and if Scotland beat us Scotland will be Champion ! The league organizer must be very happy with such an exciting last round of games !
Let’s prepare well and focus for our game. We hope to see a lot of supporters on Sunday 1300 kick off at Waigaoqiao !
It was our fourth game in the SPL U19 league and we were up against Dulwich Earthquakes ! It didn’t look good at the beginning as with 20 minutes before kick off we only had 4 players arrived ! Heavy traffic on the Friday evening was the culprit but some how and with the help of the referee who also arrived late we got all our players ready. In the first period of the game both teams played attacking forward and created some opportunities we had some great build ups and crosses fm our upcoming righ defender Yukki and Francesco got the best opportunity standing face to face with the Dulwich goalie but he shot over. It looked like we would go into half time 0-0 but in the very last minute a miscommunication between our goalie and last defender gave Dulwich an early Christmas present. In the second half our plan was to play with more forward pressing in order to force their defenders to make a mistake as well. However we ran into trouble when we lost the ball on the right and Dulwich scored with a hard strike. We tried to keep our heads up and came close a few time but while looking for the goal we got punished for leaving our defense exposed and Dulwich scored the 0-3 with 25 minutes to go.
What happened next was quite amazing as Lions players decided to fight instead of giving up. We picked up the pace of the game and produced several deadly counter attacks. Felix brought us back in the game with two goals after great build up from the middle. When we got a free kick at a dangerous spot Felix curled the ball in the top corner to make it 3-3. The Lions didn’t stop here and it was Tevin with 5 minutes to go who scored the winner. A great achievement of a well composed and mature Lions Youth team !
Finally we are back in full swing and hopefully the weather will stay good until the end of the year as we need to catch up with the schedule. We will add December 6th as another league game date and are working to get approval for the Santa Cup to be held on December the 13th. We had some great games last Sunday and what stood out is the mutual respect the teams and players have for each other after knowing each other for several years ! One other positive is that the referees are improving ! One reason is that we now have the older referees officiating in the SPL for Veterans which is great ! As well they took our advice in the beginning of the season to keep the games more fluent and less interruptions.
Marlins – Gremio 3-4
A great game of football ! Gremio struggled in the first 15 minutes as their goalie was not on time and Mika had to be the stand in he saw a fantasctic top corner strike from Gui fly in the net. Once gremio had their squad in tact they created more chances in the end Francesco scored just before half time the equalizer 1-1. In the second half both teams were trying to take the lead. It was a typical run from Wilson which gave the Marlins the lead again but it was Francesco again who equalized. When the Marlins scored by an unlucky “handball” penalty most Gremio players thought they would not be able to come back for a third time, but…….Francesco did it again by scoring his hat-trick. Gremio boosted by the goal even took the lead with a low hard strike by Roger. The Marlins tried everything to come back but in the end the referee blew the whistle. Banksy the Marlins Captain showed good sportsmanship by congratulation Mika over the we chat after the game.
ERS – Krauts 3-1
Both teams started with thin squads the first half was all about Stas from the Krauts the SPl topscorer of the last couple of years. He had three one on ones with Hugo the ERS goalie and he hit the post in the ERS kept the damage to 1 goal only by him. 0-1 at half time ! The second half saw a different game as some Krauts players started to get tired and ERS started to push them back. In the end they got their reward by a goal of Viet. Krauts were unlucky to concede a handball in the box and ERS took the lead after Nico put the ball in the net. Stas had a golden opportunity to equalize but he missed as Hugo saved it ! A good run by Viet was finished by Nico to make the final score 3-1 win for ERS.
Century Park FC – Japan 8-2
Century park started with full force and speed sending their youngsters on a rampage. Within 15 minutes it was 2-0 and they kept pushing forward and Japan had at least for now no response as it was 3-0,4-0 and 5-0 at half time. Big man was Daniel Kim scoring 4 of the goals. As Century Park new about the fresh legs of the Japanese players for the second half they as well used some fresh players and the game became faster both teams found the net this time 3-2 for century park to make the final score 8-2
The league is very interesting this season as all teams have lost some points down the road and it looks like anything can happen this time which makes every week exciting. Great for everybody maybe nerve wrecking for the managers but let’s enjoy it !
We have three SPL games this Sunday November 21st
1300-1500 Cowboys vs Super 48 @ Jinqiao
1500-1700 ERS vs Gremio @ Jinqiao
1400-1600 Century Park FC vs AVL Galacticos @ Century Park
Enjoy the games and forget for 90 minutes about all the trouble in the world of today !
Cheers Freek / SPL President on behalf of the SPL Committee
We had a strong 15 Legends squad ! We were motivated to make sure we won our game before the Scotland clash as well we thought about working on our goal difference as we were 8 goals behind Scotland before the game. In the first 20 minutes we were 4-0 up with Gwenn on fire scoring three goals and fred scoring an easy tip in ! We didn’t stop there and we played good football through out the game. Therese scored her first Lions goal and provided a great cross to Farid who scored with his head. In the end the score line stood at a Legends record 13-1 win.
Goals from : Gwenn 4 x + Farid 2x + Mathias 1 x + Claus 1x + Fred 1x + Therese 1x + Freek 1x + Francois 1x + own goal.
Now the pressure is on Scotland who need to beat Japan to clinch the title next Sunday any slip up will lead to a super clash between the Lions and Scotland on the 29th of November. We hope our Japanese friends will do the business for us !
Latest Standing :
1) Scotland played 7 points 21 goal difference +17
2) Lions played 8 points 20 goal difference + 19
3) Japan played 8 points 19 goal difference + 23
As you can see Japan has a lot to play for ! Lets go to the temple and pray for a good result !
When I woke up last Saturday the first thing I saw were some we chat messages with the shocking news from Paris. I was on the way to the SPL U8 league at SCSC when some parents notified me that the pollution was really bad. I tried to tell them that it was not too bad and put up a happy face so that at least the young boys and girls will not know what happened and so that they can enjoy playing the sport they love so much. My phone showed 180 PMI so we started the games but half way 5 teams out of 8 stopped the games and went home as they read pollutions levels over 200 on their phones. In Puxi another youth league was cancelled as well. How does Xi Jing Ping want to develop football in China if the young children cannot play because of pollution ! How long do the normal day to day people have to inhale this bad air ?
While I had to wait for our game against Japan my thought went back to 1994. I worked in Buenos Aires in one of the high rise buildings. Suddenly we heard a loud bang and the building was shaking. There was a massive mushroom cloud far from our office in the sky. Suddenly I realized that the place of the cloud was close to my hotel. I told my boss that I better went to take a look but when I arrived the devastation of the bomb was beyond all imagination. It was total chaos several building were destroyed there was a human chain with volunteers keeping the people out of the street. Here I learned a valuable lesson of live as I could see people wanting to go in to look for relatives but on the other side I could also see people trying to get in to steal belongings as in those days Argentina was very poor. I was dazed like you are in a scene of a movie but this time it was for real. My hotel room was destroyed and 67 people were killed. They bombed the embassy of Israel and several buildings close to it. The Sunday before the bombing my boss who is jewish told me to meet in front of the embassy of Israel as he would pick me up for lunch……!
It was hard to coach the game against Japan as whatever you try to tell your players its suddenly less relevant if you think about what happened in France. The issue is deeper than just the Paris attacks and there is no quick solution. All I said is that we were blessed to play football and that’s is the real truth every time we step on the fields with our friends we should be thank full ! Japan played their game of the lives and kept us at 0-0 at half time. We played well with good spirit but couldn’t find the final shot on target. Only when japan on rare occasions moved forward to attack we got the best opportunities to counter them. In the second half we tried to get the 1-0 but instead Japan outplayed our defense and the Japanese player lobbed the ball behind our goalie. We tried hard to come back in the game and did it by a penalty from Azzeddine. The best chance to take all three points came 5 minutes before the end when Danni was launched by Radouane and went one on one with the Japanese goalie. Unfortunately he couldn’t finish it and it stayed 1-1. Credit to the Japanese team especially their goalie who was outstanding ! We can live with the result and try to improve in our next game.
On behalf of all the Lions we give our condolences to all the victims in France and wish all the family and friends strength in the difficult days ahead ! Be strong !
We had a solid line up today with Jeremy missing as he ran the shanghai marathon and fred our captain half fit as he just completed the half marathon before the game !
Wales looked fresh and sharp with plenty of new players. Charles was our target man upfront helped by Therese who would make the runs to create space for Charles. We started well playing good combination football and it was no surprise we took the lead after a great through ball from Claus who put Charles one on one with the keeper. Wales protested for off side but they under estimated Charles speed and position sense ! When we thought it would be an easy game Wales struck back on a fast counter to make it 1-1. No panic from our side as we played a solid passing game however another very fast counter from Wales on the left was finished well by one of their youngsters 1-2 ! Suddenly we looked in trouble however a small change in the tactics put us back in shape a great strike from Claus leveled the score and a hand ball well spotted by the referee gave us the lead as Charles scored from the 11 meter spot ! We missed a few great opportunies to put the came to bed but we failed to score despite the great build up ! It was a lucky own goal which gave us a 4-2 lead. Wales never gave up and we must give credit to them as they showed great spirit ! Gwenn one of our youngest players (35) who was sleepy in the first half of the game woke up and made a great run as left back and ended up striking the ball with his right foot in the top corner 5-2 / a comedy moment after Thierry save a great shot saw Simon and Jerome being caught out by the Wales youngsters. Even they made the 5-4 after we left a gap in the midfield but soon the referee blew the whistle !
It was a great game of football we hoped Scotland would drop points against Emeralds but they nailed it in the last 5 minutes ! We will have to ask Japan to do us a favor next game as Scotland need to drop points to give us a chance to win the championship again ! Sake bottles have been offered to Japan already !
Lions Legend still unbeaten this season lets see if that’s enough !
We don’t know what it is about cup games to make them different but for sure this was a game to either remember or to forgot. With only 11 regular players available and the president himself who just turned 52 as only sub we knew it was not going to be easy. A few players looked like “hanged over” when they arrived and when we started to play it became obvious as we didn’t manage to play three passes in a row. 3United took advantage when we failed to clear the ball and scored the 1-0 lead. We had to step up and we did than and Tomas got the best opportunity when he was set up one on one with the goalie but his shot was too soft to beat him. Half time talk was not pleasant but no other choice we liked to turn around the game. We got the best chance when we got a penalty but Azzeddine missed the target however we got another penalty 15 minutes later because of a handball and this time he put the ball in the net. Lions looked for the winner but actually 3united came closest with a free kick which we stopped by a good reflex of radouane ! It stayed 1-1 and with a team not in good spirit and shape it was a big challenge for us to win on penalties. We lined up 5 players and Felix our youngster was brave enough to take the first and scored but Agawho took the second saw his ball bounce back from the cross bar. Luckily the 3 united player tried to copy Aga. Nicolas was next and scored and Tomas did the same so the race was tight ! Francois was our last take and he made a surprise move aiming left shooting right only to see his shot hit the post ! If 3united would score the next one it was over and ……Radouane saved it ! Next up was Benji but he was not in good shape as he come of several times during the game claiming to have eaten a wrong shrimp. The eyes were on the president could he take the pressure at such an old age….?? No hesitation the ball flew in the left corner and 3United shot their next penaly wide. OK no real celebrations for obvious reaons after playing so bad but we did turn the very negative into a slight positive at least !
Like the Captain said we need to get back at work ! Back at the training indeed it was not good to have such a long break but let’s prepare well for our next league game against Japan !
Our Lions U19 team is playing in the new SPL U19 league every Friday evening. We got our second game last Friday and were up against Aksil who are known for their great pool of talented players.
We got 4 players on a China week this week and its always worrisome for a coach to receive disturbing text messages a few hours before kick off. This time the text was “ we are vomiting and sick due to our China week” we cannot play. Luckily our Captian Oleg was still ok but he said he cannot be on time as the flight back to Shanghai was delayed.
So we were thin in the line up and needed to put some players on positions they were not familiar with. In the first 30 minutes Aksil dominated the game and were very dangerous and aggressive on the flanks and their crosses caused our defenders trouble. They could have scored a few goals for sure but in the end the damage was only one goal. As we saw them missing the opportunities we grew in confidence and started to play on the counter attacks. It was one of them that gave us the equalizer when Felix ran one on one towards the keeper he saw his effort hit the post but Bank was fast enough to react and he scored the 1-1.
In the second half Oleg arrived and it lifted our spirits. The half time talk focused on showing confidence against your opponent and force them to make some mistakes while putting more pressure on them. Aksil had to defend a bit deeper and the Lions were looking for the break through. It came through the middle after good combinations Felix finished it this time to put us in front ! Next goal Felix was the provider through the middle as he found Rick on full speed who with one move found himself in front of the keeper and didn’t hesitate to score the 3-1. Credit to Aksil that they didn’t give up here but instead they started to attack more and more to get back in the game. They got rewarded on a corner with a good header 3-2. In the end the Lions defense stayed firm and organized and good goal keeping by Riccardo who saved a great free kick at the end gave us all three points.
It was a great experience for the U19’s and it will help them to mature as a football player to play 90 minutes 11 aside games / Mandela Aksil’s coach gave some kind comments after the game as he was impressed with our youngster and thought they played like “real lions” !
That was awesome to hear and a great way to end a great game of football in Shanghai !
ot high by now as we started to play good football up next was Ferie another Japanese team and finally Fred F scored which was important as beside Charley he was our target man. Surprise Surprise Gwenn scored his second and almost took of his shirt showing his tattoo’s but in front of the Japanese that was not so smart. We drew Emerald for the semi finals we played our best football of the day and created a few good opportunities but couldn’t score. It stayed 0-0 and we were going for the penalties / a few people were ordered not to take them …. But Fred F was first and scored right and Emerald missed their first Liad was next and scored left and Thierry made sure Charles couldn’t score as he was next in the line up and because of his stop Charles couldn’t take his penalty.
Back in the final against Japan FC who we beat last year on penalties. We pushed hard to get the 1-0 lead and managed to get several corners however we couldn’t score from those. The best player of the tournament Japan no 10 had other ideas on one of the rare counter attacks he decided to take a straight volley and the ball flew unstoppable in the top corner with 1 minute to go ! It was harsh as we didn’t concede any goal during the whole tournament but with such a beauty we accepted our faith ! The beers on the way back in the bus did taste good and we are already looking forwards to next year’s Masters !
