We wanted to try out something new for our youth players and signed up for a try out session at F45 Fitness last Sunday. With over 20 players we had a nice group but didn’t know what to expect… Soon we realized it was going to be hard work and a serious workout after the coaches explained the concept. We had to work 12 stations in teams of 2 in 15 minutes without any stop. The exercises were explained on video screens and the coaches corrected us when we missed out on some techniques. After the first round, we had a two-minute water break and started our second round by now legs were getting sore, and push-ups became harder the final blow was the third round to complete the 45 minutes high-intensity workout.
Our player did really well and it was a good example for them to work on the body and mind at the same time and see the benefits. After the cool down, it was time for our reward and we all went to Fat Cow to eat a juicy burger in order to make sure the calories we lost at F45 Fitness were back on! We liked the concept and will use it more times in the future.
This season 2019-2020 was of course nothing we have ever experienced before in our lifetimes due to Covid-19. However, after the months-long pause since January, we tried hard to get our youth teams back on track. It was a long and difficult path but in the end, we succeeded since April by training at Qi Yi and organizing multiple friendlies against youth teams but also against the senior team and local Chinese teams to get our players back in shape. We are pleased that most of our players are back to their level before the Covid-19. Unfortunately, we lost many players as they couldn’t come back to China due to the travel restrictions. We miss them so much!
We organized our end of the season party last Saturday with our traditional barbecue at Dongjiao estate (same as last year) with the help of Alison, Keith, Julian & Melissa. Perfect meat of Yasmine Steak house was ordered and foot volley fields were set up on the pitch next to the barbecue pit! All players and many parents came to our event and we had a super nice group of people together! The end of the evening had an award ceremony to thank players and coaches for this season 2019-2020! Unfortunately, our top goal scorer Alvaro couldn’t attend as he & his family are still in Spain not able to return. The best player of the season award (voted by the players themselves) went to YU Xuan. We had to say goodbye to three players as they will go back home to study: Matthew, Lewis & Matty
It was a wonderful evening and it showed our family spirit. We’d like to thank everybody for their help and contribution to this season and we are looking forward to the new one 🙂
Sometimes you need a bit of luck and we were lucky on Saturday as for once these days, it didn’t rain! With the help of one of our legends Mamdouh, we got our private setting in the great facilities of the Shanghai Town and Country Club. We got a great BBQ Buffet with plenty of drinks and super service. The president gave his yearly speech looking back at the special season due to the Covid 19 and referred to the players who unfortunately never made it back to China. He also looked forward to the new season where we will focus on the youth development for players aged 12-18 and we will have a combination of older youth with seniors to play on Saturdays and the Legends will continue to play on Sunday!
After lunch, we dived into the pool and had a fierce water volleyball competition which was a joy to watch for everyone. We also took our time to say goodbye to Fred who is moving back to France and he was thanked for his contribution to the Lions for the last 8 years!
After we left the Club we followed our DJSKIV to Havana where we took over the stage. Tomas our pilot who couldn’t attend the BBQ because he was flying saw our pictures and landed his plane at 01:00 am and went straight to CYCLO where he joined the party until the early morning with the Lions!
It was a great way to end the season and it was also great to see that we are still a nice family together with people from all over the world and one passion which is football!
If you interested to join our family next season please send a message to firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks again to Mamdouh and we hope to do another Lions party at Shanghai Town & Country Club any time soon. Have a great summer!
In the afternoon, it was our youth players who had a good time at Club X where they played 3 rounds of Laser tag. The scores were close and good laser tag battles took place. Of course, the coaches Patrick, Nick & Freek were main targets for the players! It was a good way to end a great first half of the season. If you are interested to join our youth teams, you’re very welcome! If you are aged between 13-18 and need more information, please email us at email@example.com.
In the evening, we had a nice mix of legends & senior players joining the Christmas Dinner at Kartel. The drinks and the food were good and afterward, we paid respect to our DJ’s Kevin & Kad and visited Club Gypsie where ended a great evening in the late hours of the night or better said in the early mornings of the next day!
We wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy 2020. See you all next year!
Freek on behalf of all the Lions and their families
We took advantage of the dragon boat festival and the good weather at the same time. We got a great location at the Donjiao state guest house where we booked to BBQ pitch next to a small soccer field! We got great catering from Yasmin’s Steak House and plenty of ice-cold drinks. Almost every player made it and we were pleased to have many parents showing up as well! The evening ended with an Oscar type nomination where the envelopes of each category were opened by the parents.

The Icing on the cake was our U18 Championship Trophy which was celebrated with everybody!
Great end of a great season! We hope to see you all back after the summer break!
With the SPL U17 Championship won it was time to relax for our youth players and the coaches ! As the season ended late we decided to organize a bowling event on a weekday before everybody would take off for the Summer break !
The place was called Hao’s bowling and with a group of 16 people we were all set for a bowling competition. With 4 lanes and 4 teams of 4, we played two rounds. It was a fierce competition and various prices were up for grab. Every player had their own technique and style. It was fun to play and fun to watch !
Although there was no price for “the highest score on the day” it was worthwhile to mention that the honor went to Freek the oldest bowler with 145 points !
Afterwards we went for some great “bad” food at Fat Burgers and it was there the players received their trophies ! First it was Matty who got the SPL top scorer award with 19 goals and he thanked his team mates for helping him to score and after it was Julia as Captain who received the Championship trophy on behalf of the team ! She mentioned in her speech that it was hard in the beginning of the season when we lost two matches but after that we all played better and better and in the end got our reward ! Azzeddine and Nick and Freek were all thanked by the players for the hard work during the season and several players came up to speech which completed a great evening and a great season !
Well done Young Lions enjoy the break and we are looking forward to see you all back in August on the training field first !
We had a great event on Saturday for our Youth Players ! We have kept it secret until the last moment and only gave the players a meeting point in Puxi. Once everybody was checked in we went to the brand new Z & B Fitness at Changle Lu ! Before the programs started we handed out our new Nike Youth Kit and looking at the players faces they were all very happy with the new outfit !
We first got a private one hour spinning class from Kat a German teacher with very very strong legs ! The players enjoyed it and got better and better later in the session ! After this we walked down 13 floors to end up in the hands of another private teacher Guillaume who as we could see from his muscle mass was a specialist in core exercises ! He set up an one hour circuit training for the players which was surely not easy but a great way to work on our fitness and strength !
After all the hard-work there was our reward as we headed for Bella Napoli and started carbo loading ! A brilliant performance of Daiki-san ended a great day for the Lions !
We like to thank Z & B Fitness for the great reception and we will like to do this again next year !
If you are interested in the Lions Youth Academy please contact us for more information. We have players from 13-18 years old from all over the world !
We wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year !
Last weekend the SPL organized a football festival in cooperation with That’s Magazine and the Goldenbridge Company in Green City Jinqiao. That’s magazine organized the Battle of the Bands competition where High School students from all over Shanghai showed their musical talents live on stage. We, as SPL, organized a mini world cup tournament for over 400 boys and girls. On Saturday we had 24 teams of the younger ones aged 4-8 years old. The weather was perfect with clear blue sky and the fields were full with supporting parents and family ! Everybody enjoyed the games and when the boys and girls after the games were paraded to the stage it was all smiles and proud parents taking pictures. Every player got a medal and became a world champion.
On Sunday the weather was perfect again and we had 12 U10 teams in the morning. For them they also received a medal on stage and they were happy to pose for all the parents ! The group were the older ones and we organized a 7 aside tournament for U12 and U14 teams. England and Portugal were the winners of their groups and everybody of the total 8 teams went home with a nice cup ! The day ended with the older players U16 showing of their skills ! What stood out was the fair play and the speed of the games ! In the end France proved to be too strong and took the Cup home !
With no injuries and plenty of happy players its was a day to remember ! The SPL thanked the coaches and parents and referees and That’s Magazine and the Goldenbridge Company for the wonderful two days !
It was great to be back on the pitch last Saturday ! The heavy rain made the pitch difficult to play on for our friendly game against the Krauts. As usual we started slow and the Krauts tested Radouane a few times. Soon we picked up the pace and started to play good football. We had good movement by our two youngsters Chris and Arnault as they give the Krauts defenders a hard time. It was 4-0 at half time. In the second half we conceded a penalty and the Krauts scored one more by their striker Stas but the Lions kept playing football until the very end and it ended at an 8-2 win. Three goals by Azz and 3 by Arnault and 2 by Benji.
On Sunday unfortunately the game got cancelled due to the excessive rains !
