Good Sunday for the Lions !

Lions,

Before the game on Sunday it didn’t look good for the Lions as they were up against a large Japanese squad while the Lions only had 11 players plus the president. An injured Charles and a new born baby girl for Nicolas kept them out of the line up. However once the game started we showed spirit and started to play good combination football. We had several opportunities but couldn’t finish it off but finally with 15 minutes to go before half time it was Gwenn who broke the dead lock ! We knew that we needed to get at least another goal to be sure that we were not caught on a fast Japanese counter. In the second half we put our president upfront in the hope that the Japanese players will not mark him out of respect for the elderly people ! It was working as a good run by Dave on the left and good back pass made the way free for the President to blast the ball in the net. Suddenly we sensed that we could score many more goals and went on a rampage. The whole team woke up and had an excellent game attacking through the wings and taking advantage with corners of our length. It was important that we got Yngven on the score sheet before he leaves back to Norway and finally he scored ! Not only one but also a second after a corner from the President ! All was documented by great pictures of Therese his wife to be ! Dave scored two and Arnault one (should have been a few more) and to complete the revival the President scored a second with a direct corner flying in !

With the Marlins and the Cowboys draw at 3-3 we moved up to the second spot in the SPL Standing with 7 games played and 18 points two games in hand versus the leaders Centruy Park who played 9 games and got 20 points we have the same goal difference at +29 ! Next week we play the Marlins and a positive result will put us in a good position just before the CNY !

Lions start 2016 with a 1-1 draw !

Lions,

The January window is always an important time in the season. Usually we have some players missing and others might not be 100 pct match fit when they come back from the break. The team always looks a few kilos heavier as well. This time we had a solid squad with the help of some veteran players. Our opponent were the Azzurri’s and after 10 minutes of play it was obvious that they didn’t come to win but would like to settle for a draw. They rarely came over the middle line and the Lions found themselves running into a blue wall. Best chance was for Felix in the first half but he just couldn’t finish the job. Ten minutes before the end of the first half disaster struck for the Lions as an obvious innocent long ball of the Azzurri fell in between Fabie and Radoaune and both looked at each other without taking the ball. Instead Andrea took it and scored. We tried to stay calm but of course it played into the cards of the Azzurri who now could even sit more back than before. In the second half the Lions showed spirit and created a few good opportunities. It was a great cross from Azzeddine which found Felix at the back post and he gave us the well-deserved equalizer. At the end of the game we had three injured players and it was obvious not everybody was back at their usual fitness level. We did get two more opportunities to score by crosses in the box but our headers went just wide. Azzurri had just two shot on goal and most of the time were found in their own half but they got what they wanted, a draw !

Next Saturday we play the Krauts in the Cup and on Sunday we will play Japan in the SPL ! Obvious we want all Lions to come to the training this Wednesday and get our fitness back !

Legends to play SPL V championships game this Sunday !

Lions and Legends,

Without playing ourselves it was Japan who beat Scotland 3-0 that gave us a chance to clinch the title next week. On the wet pitch the Japanese players were too fast and too fit for the Scotland players. Scotland if they would have won the title race would have been over but now it all comes down to the last game of the season ! If we beat Scotland we will be Champion and if we tie Japan will be Champion and if Scotland beat us Scotland will be Champion ! The league organizer must be very happy with such an exciting last round of games !

Let’s prepare well and focus for our game. We hope to see a lot of supporters on Sunday 1300 kick off at Waigaoqiao !

Good Luck to the Legends / Cheers Freek

Legends beat FC Ferie 13-1 !

Lions,

We had a strong 15 Legends squad ! We were motivated to make sure we won our game before the Scotland clash as well we thought about working on our goal difference as we were 8 goals behind Scotland before the game. In the first 20 minutes we were 4-0 up with Gwenn on fire scoring three goals and fred scoring an easy tip in ! We didn’t stop there and we played good football through out the game. Therese scored her first Lions goal and provided a great cross to Farid who scored with his head. In the end the score line stood at a Legends record 13-1 win.

Goals from : Gwenn 4 x + Farid 2x + Mathias 1 x + Claus 1x + Fred 1x + Therese 1x + Freek 1x + Francois 1x + own goal.

Now the pressure is on Scotland who need to beat Japan to clinch the title next Sunday any slip up will lead to a super clash between the Lions and Scotland on the 29th of November. We hope our Japanese friends will do the business for us !

Latest Standing :

1)     Scotland played 7  points 21  goal difference +17

2)     Lions    played 8  points 20  goal difference + 19

3)     Japan   played 8  points 19  goal difference + 23

As you can see Japan has a lot to play for ! Lets go to the temple and pray for a good result !

Cheers Freek

It was a sad day Saturday !

Lions,

When I woke up last Saturday the first thing I saw were some we chat messages with the shocking news from Paris. I was on the way to the SPL U8 league at SCSC when some parents notified me that the pollution was really bad. I tried to tell them that it was not too bad and put up a happy face so that at least the young boys and girls will not know what happened and so that they can enjoy playing the sport they love so much. My phone showed 180 PMI so we started the games but half way 5 teams out of 8 stopped the games and went home as they read pollutions levels over 200 on their phones. In Puxi another youth league was cancelled as well. How does Xi Jing Ping want to develop football in China if the young children cannot play because of pollution ! How long do the normal day to day people have to inhale this bad air ?

While I had to wait for our game against Japan my thought went back to 1994. I worked in Buenos Aires in one of the high rise buildings. Suddenly we heard a loud bang and the building was shaking. There was a massive mushroom cloud far from our office in the sky. Suddenly I realized that the place of the cloud was close to my hotel. I told my boss that I better went to take a look but when I arrived the devastation of the bomb was beyond all imagination. It was total chaos several building were destroyed there was a human chain with volunteers keeping the people out of the street. Here I learned a valuable lesson of live as I could see people wanting to go in to look for relatives but on the other side I could also see people trying to get in to steal belongings as in those days Argentina was very poor. I was dazed like you are in a scene of a movie but this time it was for real. My hotel room was destroyed and 67 people were killed. They bombed the embassy of Israel and several buildings close to it. The Sunday before the bombing my boss who is jewish told me to meet in front of the embassy of Israel as he would pick me up for lunch……!

It was hard to coach the game against Japan as whatever you try to tell your players its suddenly less relevant if you think about what happened in France. The issue is deeper than just the Paris attacks and there is no quick solution. All I said is that we were blessed to play football and that’s is the real truth every time we step on the fields with our friends we should be thank full ! Japan played their game of the lives and kept us at 0-0 at half time. We played well with good spirit but couldn’t find the final shot on target. Only when japan on rare occasions moved forward to attack we got the best opportunities to counter them. In the second half we tried to get the 1-0 but instead Japan outplayed our defense and the Japanese player lobbed the ball behind our goalie. We tried hard to come back in the game and did it by a penalty from Azzeddine. The best chance to take all three points came 5 minutes before the end when Danni was launched by Radouane and went one on one with the Japanese goalie. Unfortunately he couldn’t finish it and it stayed 1-1. Credit to the Japanese team especially their goalie who was outstanding ! We can live with the result and try to improve in our next game.

On behalf of all the Lions we give our condolences to all the victims in France and wish all the family and friends strength in the difficult days ahead ! Be strong !

Lions Legends beat Wales 5-4 to stay in the title race !

Lions and Lions Legends,

We had a solid line up today with Jeremy missing as he ran the shanghai marathon and fred our captain half fit as he just completed the half marathon before the game !

Wales looked fresh and sharp with plenty of new players. Charles was our target man upfront helped by Therese who would make the runs to create space for Charles. We started well playing good combination football and it was no surprise we took the lead after a great through ball from Claus who put Charles one on one with the keeper. Wales protested for off side but they under estimated Charles speed and position sense ! When we thought it would be an easy game Wales struck back on a fast counter to make it 1-1. No panic from our side as we played a solid passing game however another very fast counter from Wales on the left was finished well by one of their youngsters 1-2 ! Suddenly we looked in trouble however a small change in the tactics put us back in shape a great strike from Claus leveled the score and a hand ball well spotted by the referee gave us the lead as Charles scored from the 11 meter spot ! We missed a few great opportunies to put the came to bed but we failed to score despite the great build up ! It was a lucky own goal which gave us a 4-2 lead. Wales never gave up and we must give credit to them as they showed great spirit ! Gwenn one of our youngest players (35) who was sleepy in the first half of the game woke up and made a great run as left back and ended up striking the ball with his right foot in the top corner 5-2 / a comedy moment after Thierry save a great shot saw Simon and Jerome being caught out by the Wales youngsters. Even they made the 5-4 after we left a gap in the midfield but soon the referee blew the whistle !

It was a great game of football we hoped Scotland would drop points against Emeralds but they nailed it in the last 5 minutes ! We will have to ask Japan to do us a favor next game as Scotland need to drop points to give us a chance to win the championship again ! Sake bottles have been offered to Japan already !

Lions Legend still unbeaten this season lets see if that’s enough !

Cheers Freeksunday 187 sunday 186 sunday 185 sunday 184 sunday 182 sunday 180

Lions advance in Hebeiguchi Cup after penalties !

Lions,

We don’t know what it is about cup games to make them different but for sure this was a game to either remember or to forgot. With only 11 regular players available and the president himself who just turned 52 as only sub we knew it was not going to be easy. A few players looked like “hanged over” when they arrived and when we started to play it became obvious as we didn’t manage to play three passes in a row. 3United took advantage when we failed to clear the ball and scored the 1-0 lead. We had to step up and we did than and Tomas got the best opportunity when he was set up one on one with the goalie but his shot was too soft to beat him. Half time talk was not pleasant but no other choice we liked to turn around the game. We got the best chance when we got a penalty but Azzeddine missed the target however we got another penalty 15 minutes later because of a handball and this time he put the ball in the net. Lions looked for the winner but actually 3united came closest with a free kick which we stopped by a good reflex of radouane ! It stayed 1-1 and with a team not in good spirit and shape it was a big challenge for us to win on penalties. We lined up 5 players and Felix our youngster was brave enough to take the first and scored but Agawho took the second saw his ball bounce back from the cross bar. Luckily the 3 united player tried to copy Aga. Nicolas was next and scored and Tomas did the same so the race was tight ! Francois was our last take and he made a surprise move aiming left shooting right only to see his shot hit the post ! If 3united would score the next one it was over and ……Radouane saved it ! Next up was Benji but he was not in good shape as he come of several times during the game claiming to have eaten a wrong shrimp. The eyes were on the president could he take the pressure at such an old age….?? No hesitation the ball flew in the left corner and 3United shot their next penaly wide. OK no real celebrations for obvious reaons after playing so bad but we did turn the very negative into a slight positive at least !

Like the Captain said we need to get back at work ! Back at the training indeed it was not good to have such a long break but let’s prepare well for our next league game against Japan !

Cheers Freek

Lions beat their old rival the Shooters 1-0 !

Lions,

The weather could not have been better blue sky and a comfortable 23 degrees last Saturday. The opponent were the Shooters so all was set for a big game ! Radouane our goalie took the sentence to be on time very serious as he arrived 20 seconds before kick off. It must have been a challenge for him but we were happy that he made it coming from work ! The game started slow with both teams trying to figure out where the weak spots were. The shooter tried thru their trade mark long balls on the wings and the Lions tried to dominate the mid field as the game moved on the Shooters were pushed back more and more. Lions were denied by Chris the Shooters goalie a couple of times but a great combination between Azzeddine and Danni resulted in the first goal of the game as Danni scored in the left corner. It was 1-0 at half time and playing the Shooters you know that could be a too narrow margin. The focus was on the defense to make sure we didn’t give away the match and upfront we tried to finish it off. We should have scored at least two or three more goals as it was harder and harder for the Shooters to stop us. At a point they even tried to make a rugby tackle to stop Azzeddine but even that didn’t work for them. Shooters are famous for scoring in the last minutes but this time our defense was rock solid and motivated until the end not to let it happen. When the David the Chinese referee who had an excellent game came there was happiness. First because of the three points and second because of the clean sheet and last and not least because of the spirit we showed. Compliments were given to our youngsters who showed positive aggression and gave the Shooters a hard time !

Our next game will be agains the Azzurri and we know that those are the games we like as both teams will play open football until the end !

Let’ s all come to the training to keep the focus and build on our fitness !

Well done Lions ! Cheers Freek

Lions showed spirit and beat Gremio 5-1 !

Lions,

It was a beautiful day yesterday ! Perfect weather and a green pitch !

We had an interesting line up yesterday with Fred Fuseau showing up while not being selected and Farid making his come back after a world serie of injuries and Aga making his debut for the Lions !

Our strategy was laid out by Charles and Garret and the plan was to start aggressive and try to score first. Our start was one of the best we have seen for some time. All players were full of aggression and especially our youngsters Felix and Arnault were giving the Gremio defenders a hard time. It was a well spotted hand ball that gave us a penalty and Azz had no problem converting. We kept the pressure high and soon Azz lobbed the ball over the keeper from the right to make it 2-0. Against our game plan we did give back a goal to Gremio after we didn’t handle a long ball well. In the last 15 minutes of the first half we put Fred F on in order to create more havoc ! He came close once and on another fast counter attack Azz ran thru the Gremio defence and spotted Fred a quick look and an agreement on the amount of free steaks @ Morton’s was made and Azz laid the ball off and Fred hesitated for one second but than blasted the ball in the net. It was 3-1 at half time and in the second half we were a bit less focused especially in the finishing. All though Gremio didn’t create any opportunities or shots by themselves we started to give them some and escaped a possible penalty against us. In the last 15 minutes Charles scored two goals after good build up play from the midfield to make the final score 5-1 ! It was a great game from the Lions and a well deserved victory !

Up next will be “El Classico” versus the Shooters 1500 PM at Waigaoqiao.

Lets all come to the training to keep this momentum / As well bring the membership fee if you have not done so as we have to pay all the League Fees this week !

Cheers Happy Freek

Lions hammered ERS 6-0 on Sept. 27th 2015 at Century Park!

Lions,

Yesterday Sundat Sept. 27th, we had our 3rd official SPL game vs ERS at 4pm in Century Park.

Just before our game, we saw the Marlins lose 4-1 to Century Park FC and they honestly could have easily lost like 7 or 8-1 from what we witnessed…the youngsters of former Shanghai 2000 just killed the older/slower Marlins/Shooters players… Marlins dropping points was a very good operation for us, provided that we won our game against ERS…

Only President Freek and co-coach Garret were missing, otherwise on a perfect pitch/weather conditions, we had a full squad of 14 hungry Lions, eager to avenge our honor after last game defeat vs Krauts….

Pat L., Farid K, Aki, Francois L and Simon new girlfriend came to support us, thanks to them again !!!

For the occasion and with a line-up of mainly offensive players, we changed our formation to 4 -5-1, which appeared to be extremely fruitful, as we completely dominated the game in every line all match long. It is new comer Felix who was just subed from Benj about 30mn from the start who scored after a genius pass through the whole ERS defense from Az…That was just the beginning of the ERS nightmare….Az was on fire and blasted another goal in the top left corner soon after, making it a 2-0 lead at half-time.

We all decided that 2-0 wasn’t satisfactory at all and set our mind to finish the ERS off in the second half. We operated a couple of substitutions : Nico C. came in left mid for Chris B. and new comer James T. came in forward for Thomas C. We took again the control of the game, barcelona style and ERS never really stood a chance, as the balls were very rarely coming to their only striking force Kevin, as our Viking stopper Yngve made it impossible for him to get any ball at all…Heard Kevin is now thinking of playing in the midfield…

Anyways, goals came from James T, an own goal, Az, then Nico C. took an orgasmic pleasure to score against his former teammates…(Nico only scores 1 or 2 goals per season and only vs ERS…)

We ended the game with an ass slap 6-0 and a clean sheet !

We saw some of the ERS players crying and running in the woods of Century Park after the game and we heard later on that a big fire took place in the Park….strange…

The spirit was there, we played well tactically and techincally, a game to remember and to take as example…Well done everyone !

Next game will be on Oct. 11th at 3pm in WGQ versus Gremio FC, please register asap and come to training on wed. !
