About the Club

History of the Shanghai Lions Football Club

Welcome to The Shanghai Lions Football Club, the best amateur football club in Shanghai! The history of our club started in 1996, when Brian McCloskey founded the Lions and entered an expat 9-aside football competition called Shanghai International Football League (SIFL). The league itself has been growing over the years as the level of competition got better and better. From 1996-2003, the Lions clinched several Championships trophies and won several SIFL Cup’s.

Founded the Shanghai Premier League (SPL) in 1998

When the opportunity came to start their own league in Pudong, the Lions were quick to take the chance and founded the Shanghai Premier League back in 1998. Until today, the Lions have been playing in the SPL and won several Cups and Championships.

Les “Bleus” merged with the Lions

In 2008, the Lions merged with “Les Bleus” a predominantly French team in order to be able to compete in both the SIFL and SPL. Its was at that time that the idea came up to enter as the Lions in many competitions as possible. The Lions entered into the Summer 7’s and into the Shanghai Masters (veterans) as well as the Fantasy League 7’s on Mondays. It has proven to be a success as we were able to win most of these competitions. The Lions even went overseas to Thailand to win the Phuket 7’s tournament in November 2011.

Voted “best sports team in Shanghai”

As we started competing and wining many different leagues, our team was voted “Best Sports Team of Shanghai” two years in a row in 2010 and 2011. A great achievement!

Creation of the Shanghai Lions Football Club in 2012

Football in Shanghai is not like in Europe or America. The biggest problem is that there are not enough football fields and that there are no real Football Clubs. This was our motivation to start the Shanghai Lions Football Club in 2012. With the aim of bringing the “Club Feeling” that we all remember from back home to Shanghai. Don’t get us wrong, we all like to have fun, party and make new friends.

As we can’t get enough silverware, our aim is to win all high level amateur competition in Shanghai. In order to do so, our secret formula over the years has been a combination of Team Spirit,  Friendship,  Training and Discipline.
