Mixed ressults for the Lions this weekend

On Saturday we faced the DIB for the third time this year for the quarter final of the SIFL Cup. Whenever we play them we know it will be a very close game and we need to be 100 pct focused to get a result. It was good to see Max our goal keeper back in Shanghai and early in the game he made sure we kept a clean sheet. We got some good opportunities on the breaks and Charles came closest when his volley hit the woodwork. Nil-nil at half time and in the second half we took more possession and started to play better football. The reward came 15 minutes before the end by an excellent goal started on the left by Azzeddine who found Benji and he decided to take three DIB players on at once and crossed the ball in and out of nowhere came Francois our right back to slot home the 1-0. Straight after we got a great opportunity to make it 2-0 by a header of Azzeddine. The way the game developed we knew it will not be easy for DIB to score but as it goes in football things can change. An unfortunate drop of the ball by Max our goalie landed straight in the feet of Didier who score from close range, 1-1. Moments later a deflected cross fell again straight in the feet of the DIB striker and the game was upside down. This time there was no turn around in the game. Losing is part of the game and it will make us stronger.  It was good to see all Lions staying back for a beer and some fun with our New Dutch player who gave a live performance at WGQ!

Next up are the Azzurri and obvious that is  a massive league game for us !

On Sunday we faced the Bulls who for the occasion had a few Azzurri players on loan. The Bulls won their last 8 games and we knew it wouldn’t be a walk over. After two minutes they scored ! Call it a wake up call ! After that we started to play some good football and were very dangerous on the counter attacks. Twice Matthieu scored with a header and we could haves score a few more goals. In the second half stand in goalie Francois saved us twice as the Bulls got a clear scoring opportunity!

After Big John showed us in the first half how not to take a free kick and Yosh followed on this it was out of all people Simon who scored from a free kick. Soon after it was Dave’s turn and he smashed the ball in the top corner! 4-1 a good result and a good lions performance! Next up are the Galacticos and of course we need to continue our unbeaten run.

In the pooring rain we had a special training session by Azzeddine for our young Lions and a turn out of 13 boys was good given that some couldn’t make due to tournament commitments. The boys had fun and learned a lot. This is a good example of the strength of the Lions as all the training we organize are done by the best people we have in our own club. Great way to end the weekend !

We expect everybody to come to the training on Wednesday and we all look forward to the weekend already !

Cheers Freek

Lions Youth now open for registration U16 and U18 season 2013/14

Young Lions,

u18 004

Last season after we established the Shanghai Lions Football Club we can look back at a very successful season. We have won over 6 titles and to have won both the SIFL and the SPL Championship (the best leagues in Shanghai) tells us that we are on the right track !

We started with our first youth team the Lions U18 last year. The key driver to do this was the enthusiasm of the boys who joined. It was a real pleasure to train with them and they were really motivated to play finally for a real club instead of the usual school games. We entered with our youth team in the SPL men’s tournament the Santa Cup and it was a great experience for the boys / we organized friendly games versus school teams as well against the Shanghai Lions Senior teams / some of the U18 players were selected for Senior team games and gained valuable experience and Alex and Lucas even ended up having played in the SIFL Cup final which we won !

In order to give more players an opportunity to play for the Shanghai Lions and experience what it is to play for a Club we decided to add an U16 team as both U16 – U18 teams can benefit each other.

What we can offer to the boys and girls is listed below :

– once a week 2 hours training most likely on a Wednesday or Friday evening.

Trainings are hold by experienced Lions players who are still playing regular in the Men’s Lions teams. Trainings will focus on skill / speed / stamina / team play / strength. Obvious the ones who come regular to the trainings will benefit most !

– friendly games against schools and or shanghai teams and against the Men’s teams. Mostly on weekends.

– Entering of tournaments either for youth or for men’s, like the Lions Cup and Santa Cup

– Outfit / every player will get his own set of shirt/short/socks

The Fee for this season will be 2000 rmb which you can pay at the first training we will announce the place and date of the training in due course, most likely at the Century Par !

If you are interested to join please send an email to info@shanghai-lions.com with your confirmation and we will keep the spot reserved for you !

Looking forward to see and train more young Lions so that they can take care of our future of our Club !

Young Lions on the right track

[ Youth ] Shanghai Lions 8-1 LFS U18 FC (03 Feb 2013)

Young Lions,

Last Sunday we had a big test of our standing as a team after months of training. Unfortunately we had a few Lions missing but with a very young 49 year old goalie we were ready to take on the French!

  1. First 30 minutes we played very well as we started more aggressive and punished the French players for weak defending / You noticed if you train every week you get stronger and have more confidence 3-1
  2. Second 30 minutes we asked all of you to control the game by passing the ball around as we were leading 3-1 there was no rush to score. Here we ran into bit of trouble as we didn’t have full confidence to short pass to each other and the French pressured us helped by the wind. However luck was on our side and we increased the score to 5-1
  3. Third 30 minutes we were more relaxed as we knew we will win this game so confidence was large and managed to score a few more good goals 8-1

Coaches were very pleased with the performance as well with the team spirit which is a key element of winning game. The fact that several young lions stayed back to watch the men beat the French 3-0 with two goals from coach Garret, showed a good club spirit!

This Wednesday we have one more training at Century Park at 1800 PM before the Chinese New Year Holiday and it will be a fun training with a lots of games ! Please ask everybody to come even new players just bring them and show them what it is to play for club!

After the new year we will check all the soccer schedules of the young lions as most of you will have school competition so we adjust our training’s schedule  we will focus on games!

See you all on Wednesday

Coach Freek / Joel / Garret

We are at the start of a new year !!!

Dear Lions,

We are at the start of a new year ! Instead of looking back I would like to look forward.

I can see the Lion’s Football Club growing further as well we will continue to build a good reputation for ourselves.

People acknowledge that we are a well organized organisation.

We are in the running for both the SPL and the SIFL title and we will give it our best shot by hard work at trainings, discipline on the pitch and last but not least good team spirit on and off the field !

We will continue to develop our U18 team and we hope to add an U16 team next season.

The veterans will defend their shanghai masters title this year and they look stronger each and every year as more Lions reach the magic number over being over 35 !

We will organize the Lions summers 7’s again and are thinking of a Lions Cup in September ! As well we will organize events at our Lions Lounge at BLOC our sponsor !

I wish all the Lions a great sports year ! Remember that YOU are the Shanghai Lions Football Club !

Lions U18 lost 2-0 but improved their game

[ Youth ] Shanghai LIONS 0-2 Japan FC (09 Dec 2012)

Young Lions,

It was pretty cold to play but luckily all the players got their Lions winter sweater just in time ! Japan was our opponent and they are always a good team to play against as they are technical, skillful, fast and love to counter attack !

After our training sessions our objective was to play better football than our last encounter. The game was split into three portions of 25 minutes each and I was pleased to see that especially our last third was our best.

We created good opportunities and were a bit unlucky not to get a goal. We had a solid goalie and a solid defense. We still have a lot of things to learn of course but that’s why we play these kind of games. Well done young Lions and thank you for the parents who came and see the boys play !

Next is the Santa Cup this coming Sunday and we let you play to get a taste of what it is like to play in the Men’s League. You will learn that physical strength and speed are very important and that you need to decide fast to make a pass or a shot. Its all about the experience and this tournament will be a good experience for all of you ! The tournament is at Waigaoqiao and starts at 1100 AM and finish at 1700 PM.

Hope to see all young Lions on Sunday !

Coach Freek

Lions U18 complete training No 7 !

Young Lions,

We are almost done with our training sessions of 2012 ! We are pleased to see that most of the boys didn’t miss a single training session. For a football player training is essential first of all to improve your skill and secondly to improve your match fitness. For a Youth Football player its even more important as especially on the skill front there are many factors to improve like the “first touch”, ball control, shielding with your body, speed with or without ball, passing, shooting etc… All the training efforts you put in will pay off and it will make you a better and stronger player.  Especially the position plays are essential to understand and to learn from. We all know that Barcelona are the masters of this play you never see them passing a long ball because a long ball can be easily intercepted by the opponent, instead they stick to short passes and are able to keep the ball into possession for a long spell. The key success of Barcelona is the training as they are practicing this game form day in and day out and they became masters of their own skill.  Our advice is to never miss a training session if you want to become a better player !

Until the end of the 2012 we have to following in store for you :

5/12 – Last training at century park 1800-2000 All games and fun training pls bring your friends to try out our trainings / guest are welcome

9/12 – Lions U18 vs Japan U18 1200-1400 at WGQ last game was a draw let see whether we can beat them now after all our trainings

14/12 – Lions Christmas dinner at Bloc / U18 + Parents are more than welcome

16/12 – Santa Cup 1100-1630 at Waigaoqiao 8-aside / 16 teams men’s tournament !

Keep working hard young Lions we have a great U18 team and we enjoy to work with all of you !

[SPL News] SPL title race wide open

Amigo’s and Amiga’s,

Slowly we see some Christmas decorations popping up in the City ! Temperatures are dropping and winter is around the corner ! I am praying everyday for snow during the Santa Cup ! Talking about the Santa Cup we have 16 teams confirmed for December the 16th and this weekend  the draw will be done by M. Santa himself !

Last Sunday we had perfect football conditions blue sky 15 degrees and still green grass and good games of football ! The top 4 of the SPL is within two points of each making it very interesting this anniversary season !

  • ERS 2-5 Cowboys

Two very well managed teams fighting for glory. Our French Friends had no answer for the fast counter attacks of the Cowboys esp striker Zhuang was a threat. Cowboys took a solid 0-2 lead but ran into trouble when their defender was sent off after a second booking. This made the game more interesting and right after half time ERS pulled one back and forced the Cowboys more and more in defense. However the Cowboys kept scoring on fast breaks and with their win became the new SPL leaders for the first time in their SPL history !

  • Marlins 11-0 Pistolera Bulls

Its very rare for the Pistolera Bulls not to score in a game and to concede 11 goals. We tried to contact Bilgin after the game to ask for his comments but the phone was turned off. Beside his poor team performance he was also not happy NOT to have received a yellow card in this game ! Marlins are on a rampage for goal difference. Fedja already netter 20 goals, defenders and goalkeepers you cannot say we didn’t warn you in advance !

  • Gremio 2-3 Lions

You can almost call this game “el classico” ! Always a good game of football, hard fast and fair ! Lions were so motivated for the game that within 10 minutes they scored twice and Gremio realized they needed to regroup themselves fast as otherwise it could go very wrong. They did that before half time with a strong strike from Xu. Lions knew that they needed to score another goal to be safe and they did that but………………in their own net after it bounced off the cross bar by Dave ! 2-2 and 15 minutes to go temperatures were rising but the Lions seemed more composed and clinched the winner by their young striker Martin.

  • Super 48 2-7 Shanghai 2000

Good to see Super 48 scoring more goals and for Shanghai 2000 it was their third victory as rooky in the SPL !

If you like to update your team page on our website please send the relevant info/pictures to Frederick. We noticed that a few teams still are pointless in the league but within the next couple of games that should be sorted out as they will play against each other.

25 Nov 2012 Schedule is on:

  • 1000-1200 Gremio – Flamenkos
  • 1200-1400 Lions – ERS
  • 1400-1600 Japan – Galacticos
  • 1400-1600 Cowboys – Shanghai 2000 @ Century Park

Enjoy the games and hopefully the forecasted rain will disappear !

Freek – SPL President on behalf of the SPL Committee !

Lions U18 draw in their first game !

[ Youth ] Shanghai LIONS 3-3 Japan FC

Young Lions,

Finally we had our first game ! Our opponent was a well organized fast and furious Japanese site. Excellent team to play against. We decided to break the game in three parts so that we had more time to discuss what has to be improved.

Our first 25 minutes we were a bit nervous and forgot to pass the ball.

The second 25 minutes we were much better more in control and more confident and the last 25 minutes we forgot to win the game and we did get 6 passes in row !

Overall a good experience and at training we will work on position plays especially when we lose the ball everybody need to defend otherwise you run into trouble against a good counter attacking side like the Japanese team.

Well done boys 3-3 !

Lions win the China Nation Cup in Hangzhou !

With two strong and motivated lions team we took the Speed train to Hangzhou !

Weather was good and the pitch fine. Both teams in different groups but the fact that Charles scored 8 goals in two games can give you a hint about the level.

Anyway we went over to have fun and with all our games won by both teams it was time for party !

After a good meal and having watched Man United beat Arsenal we hit the Club scene. Last man standing was Jonny o Shea as he noted that there were only 5 people left when he left G plus.

Next day we needed to see the damage of the night before but it was not too bad with only Matt, Chris and Jonny of course missing !

The semi finals our both teams beat two different Japanese teams to make it to the final.

As a Lions versus Lions final would not be fun we decided to enjoy the day with a penalty shoot out and some hit the “Butt” games !

We got the Cup and added another Trophy to our collection !

Cheers Freek
