Lions left empty handed after penalties in the Hebiguchi Cup Final!

Last Saturday May 21st 2016,  we were playing the Hebiguchi cup final in the SIFL ! Conditions were very difficult, as it had been raining the whole day, which made the pitch hard to play on. As the game started and moved on, we quickly noticed the referee was very poor as he never stopped the Shooters from dangerous tackling and when Dani was purposely kicked in the chest right in front of the referee he didn’t even gave a card !

As the frustration crept in, we couldn’t play our usual passing game due to the pitch and we were more worried about our legs than looking for a goal. It stayed 0-0 at half time and in the second half we tried to look for a break through / we got plenty of free kicks but most ended in the hands of Chris the Shooters goalie.

With a few minutes left on the clock, it was a Shooters corner which gave them the lead it seemed like game over but 2 minutes later on a fast break it was Tevz who was fouled just in the box and got us a penalty. Az stayed cool and made it 1-1 ! After the final whistle, it was straight to penalties although we had good intentions we missed 2 out of 5 and couldn’t stop theirs. After the match we congratulated the Shooters with the Cup win.

Next Saturday it will be the end of the season tournament and closing ceremony where we can pick up our trophies !

Lions clinched another trophy on Saturday !

On Saturday, we were up against the old rival the Shooters in the SIFL Champions Cup final ! We were missing Fabitch and Jack and of course Pat who left for Germany. We then had to make some changes into our regular line up and opted for Simon as stopper. The Shooters started well and the “in form” Mcgoo and Wilson caused us some trouble, however they couldn’t find the net and we scored first after 20 min when a great free kick from Felix sailed over the Shooters goalie and Dani was there to score with a nice header.

Just before half time the Shooters did come back and equalized when they spotted a hole in our defense. It was 1-1 at half time and we knew that we had to change something and we put Benj in in the defense and moved Simon up. With 15 min into the 2nd half Dani showed some skill on the left as he lobbed the ball over his opponent who reacted too late and fouled him in the box. The very moody and poor referee on the day pointed to the spot and Az nailed it to gave us the lead back.

Shooters showed good spirit as it was still a final to win some silverware and kept pushing forward. They scored after a great combination through the middle and an unstoppable strike. Good stuff for the spectators by now and the Lions stroke back by a great run and cross from Aga who found Az and he gave us the 3-2 lead. The turning point of the game soon followed when Aga cleared a ball in our box put the Shooters player felt over his leg in the move and the poor referee gave a penalty to the Shooters. We feared for the worst when Mcgoo stood up but…….. Dim our keeper stopped the penalty with class. We knew we were on the way of winning the match and Simon put the icing on the cake after a fine cross of Khalil as he blasted the ball in the goal to make it 4-2 ! We have one more final to play in two weeks the Hebiguchi Cup again against the Shooters as our captain Benj stated after the game lets get one more trophy !

On Sunday in the SPL the Lions will play ERS at the Century Park field for a decisive match and a win will put us closer to the title !

Lions stay on top in the SPL despite losing against the Marlins !

When the game started the weather was nice ! We had a highly motivated team at the start of the game as we like BIG games and games against the Marlins are always a fierce battle. In the first half both team were mainly battling it out on the midfield not many opportunities for both sides. The lions were more skill full in the short passes but the Marlins defending strong. It was 10 minutes before half time when a good pass from Charles found Danni who dubbed the ball to Azzeddine and with a quick pass Danni got the ball back and finished to make it 1-0. Soon after we got a great opportunity to make it 2-0 but we missed for the open goal ! In the second half we lost some of our midfield play and the Marlins with the help of the wind started to counter more with long balls. A dubious penalty given by the referee put the Marlins back in the game 1-1 and soon after disaster struck when Jack our defender was clearly tripped by a Marlins attacker in our box but instead of the free kick for us, Kevin the referee gave the Marlins a corner. We didn’t deal well with it and the scored 2-1 ! We had to push forward ourselves now and with our young squad we tried to get a least an equalizer however it was not to be our day. Frustrating day for us but we are still on top of the SPl with one point more than Century Park FC and plenty of games to go as we are only half way in the season !

Our next game will be Sunday 1300 @ waigaoqiao against the galacticos

Lions advance to Hebeiguchi Cup Semi-Final !

It was a cup game for us last Saturday with a thin squad and knowing that we had a big game next week against the Shooters. Key was to stay injury free and no cards. We missed several players today but started well controlling the game and taking the lead after great combinations in the midfield Allan opened the score 1-0. We added another one with again good combination football finished by our right back Aga. All looked good until Yngven thought chirstmas was not over yet and handed a belated gift to the Krauts. It was accepted and we went 2-1 up into half time. The second half was characterized by the missed opportunities by the Lions as they should have put the game to bed on several occasions ! However as it goes in football if you fail to score the opponent will do it for you. It was an unnecessary penalty that brought the Krauts back in the game with 5 minutes to go. Penalties would decide who would go through to the semis and after Azz missed the first I didn’t look good for us but with a stop of Radouane and goals from Laid, Fabie,Nicolas our left back with his right foot, and Aga we made it as Stas Krauts topscorer shot his penalty into orbit !

We will be up against Reunited in the semi final but first next week we have the BIG game versus the Shooters ! Obvious that we expect all of you at the training this Wednesday and be ready for Saturday !

Lions start 2016 with a 1-1 draw !

The January window is always an important time in the season. Usually we have some players missing and others might not be 100 pct match fit when they come back from the break. The team always looks a few kilos heavier as well. This time we had a solid squad with the help of some veteran players. Our opponent were the Azzurri’s and after 10 minutes of play it was obvious that they didn’t come to win but would like to settle for a draw. They rarely came over the middle line and the Lions found themselves running into a blue wall. Best chance was for Felix in the first half but he just couldn’t finish the job. Ten minutes before the end of the first half disaster struck for the Lions as an obvious innocent long ball of the Azzurri fell in between Fabie and Radoaune and both looked at each other without taking the ball. Instead Andrea took it and scored. We tried to stay calm but of course it played into the cards of the Azzurri who now could even sit more back than before. In the second half the Lions showed spirit and created a few good opportunities. It was a great cross from Azzeddine which found Felix at the back post and he gave us the well-deserved equalizer. At the end of the game we had three injured players and it was obvious not everybody was back at their usual fitness level. We did get two more opportunities to score by crosses in the box but our headers went just wide. Azzurri had just two shot on goal and most of the time were found in their own half but they got what they wanted, a draw !

Next Saturday we play the Krauts in the Cup and on Sunday we will play Japan in the SPL ! Obvious we want all Lions to come to the training this Wednesday and get our fitness back !

It was a sad day Saturday !

When I woke up last Saturday the first thing I saw were some we chat messages with the shocking news from Paris. I was on the way to the SPL U8 league at SCSC when some parents notified me that the pollution was really bad. I tried to tell them that it was not too bad and put up a happy face so that at least the young boys and girls will not know what happened and so that they can enjoy playing the sport they love so much. My phone showed 180 PMI so we started the games but half way 5 teams out of 8 stopped the games and went home as they read pollutions levels over 200 on their phones. In Puxi another youth league was cancelled as well. How does Xi Jing Ping want to develop football in China if the young children cannot play because of pollution ! How long do the normal day to day people have to inhale this bad air ?

While I had to wait for our game against Japan my thought went back to 1994. I worked in Buenos Aires in one of the high rise buildings. Suddenly we heard a loud bang and the building was shaking. There was a massive mushroom cloud far from our office in the sky. Suddenly I realized that the place of the cloud was close to my hotel. I told my boss that I better went to take a look but when I arrived the devastation of the bomb was beyond all imagination. It was total chaos several building were destroyed there was a human chain with volunteers keeping the people out of the street. Here I learned a valuable lesson of live as I could see people wanting to go in to look for relatives but on the other side I could also see people trying to get in to steal belongings as in those days Argentina was very poor. I was dazed like you are in a scene of a movie but this time it was for real. My hotel room was destroyed and 67 people were killed. They bombed the embassy of Israel and several buildings close to it. The Sunday before the bombing my boss who is jewish told me to meet in front of the embassy of Israel as he would pick me up for lunch……!

It was hard to coach the game against Japan as whatever you try to tell your players its suddenly less relevant if you think about what happened in France. The issue is deeper than just the Paris attacks and there is no quick solution. All I said is that we were blessed to play football and that’s is the real truth every time we step on the fields with our friends we should be thank full ! Japan played their game of the lives and kept us at 0-0 at half time. We played well with good spirit but couldn’t find the final shot on target. Only when japan on rare occasions moved forward to attack we got the best opportunities to counter them. In the second half we tried to get the 1-0 but instead Japan outplayed our defense and the Japanese player lobbed the ball behind our goalie. We tried hard to come back in the game and did it by a penalty from Azzeddine. The best chance to take all three points came 5 minutes before the end when Danni was launched by Radouane and went one on one with the Japanese goalie. Unfortunately he couldn’t finish it and it stayed 1-1. Credit to the Japanese team especially their goalie who was outstanding ! We can live with the result and try to improve in our next game.

On behalf of all the Lions we give our condolences to all the victims in France and wish all the family and friends strength in the difficult days ahead ! Be strong !

Lions Legends beat Wales 5-4 to stay in the title race !

Lions and Lions Legends,

We had a solid line up today with Jeremy missing as he ran the shanghai marathon and fred our captain half fit as he just completed the half marathon before the game !

Wales looked fresh and sharp with plenty of new players. Charles was our target man upfront helped by Therese who would make the runs to create space for Charles. We started well playing good combination football and it was no surprise we took the lead after a great through ball from Claus who put Charles one on one with the keeper. Wales protested for off side but they under estimated Charles speed and position sense ! When we thought it would be an easy game Wales struck back on a fast counter to make it 1-1. No panic from our side as we played a solid passing game however another very fast counter from Wales on the left was finished well by one of their youngsters 1-2 ! Suddenly we looked in trouble however a small change in the tactics put us back in shape a great strike from Claus leveled the score and a hand ball well spotted by the referee gave us the lead as Charles scored from the 11 meter spot ! We missed a few great opportunies to put the came to bed but we failed to score despite the great build up ! It was a lucky own goal which gave us a 4-2 lead. Wales never gave up and we must give credit to them as they showed great spirit ! Gwenn one of our youngest players (35) who was sleepy in the first half of the game woke up and made a great run as left back and ended up striking the ball with his right foot in the top corner 5-2 / a comedy moment after Thierry save a great shot saw Simon and Jerome being caught out by the Wales youngsters. Even they made the 5-4 after we left a gap in the midfield but soon the referee blew the whistle !

It was a great game of football we hoped Scotland would drop points against Emeralds but they nailed it in the last 5 minutes ! We will have to ask Japan to do us a favor next game as Scotland need to drop points to give us a chance to win the championship again ! Sake bottles have been offered to Japan already !

Lions Legend still unbeaten this season lets see if that’s enough !

Lions beat their old rival the Shooters 1-0 !

The weather could not have been better blue sky and a comfortable 23 degrees last Saturday. The opponent were the Shooters so all was set for a big game ! Radouane our goalie took the sentence to be on time very serious as he arrived 20 seconds before kick off. It must have been a challenge for him but we were happy that he made it coming from work ! The game started slow with both teams trying to figure out where the weak spots were. The shooter tried thru their trade mark long balls on the wings and the Lions tried to dominate the mid field as the game moved on the Shooters were pushed back more and more. Lions were denied by Chris the Shooters goalie a couple of times but a great combination between Azzeddine and Danni resulted in the first goal of the game as Danni scored in the left corner. It was 1-0 at half time and playing the Shooters you know that could be a too narrow margin. The focus was on the defense to make sure we didn’t give away the match and upfront we tried to finish it off. We should have scored at least two or three more goals as it was harder and harder for the Shooters to stop us. At a point they even tried to make a rugby tackle to stop Azzeddine but even that didn’t work for them. Shooters are famous for scoring in the last minutes but this time our defense was rock solid and motivated until the end not to let it happen. When the David the Chinese referee who had an excellent game came there was happiness. First because of the three points and second because of the clean sheet and last and not least because of the spirit we showed. Compliments were given to our youngsters who showed positive aggression and gave the Shooters a hard time !

Our next game will be agains the Azzurri and we know that those are the games we like as both teams will play open football until the end !

Let’ s all come to the training to keep the focus and build on our fitness !

Well done Lions ! Cheers Freek

Lions showed spirit and beat Gremio 5-1 !

It was a beautiful day yesterday ! Perfect weather and a green pitch !

We had an interesting line up yesterday with Fred Fuseau showing up while not being selected and Farid making his come back after a world serie of injuries and Aga making his debut for the Lions !

Our strategy was laid out by Charles and Garret and the plan was to start aggressive and try to score first. Our start was one of the best we have seen for some time. All players were full of aggression and especially our youngsters Felix and Arnault were giving the Gremio defenders a hard time. It was a well spotted hand ball that gave us a penalty and Azz had no problem converting. We kept the pressure high and soon Azz lobbed the ball over the keeper from the right to make it 2-0. Against our game plan we did give back a goal to Gremio after we didn’t handle a long ball well. In the last 15 minutes of the first half we put Fred F on in order to create more havoc ! He came close once and on another fast counter attack Azz ran thru the Gremio defence and spotted Fred a quick look and an agreement on the amount of free steaks @ Morton’s was made and Azz laid the ball off and Fred hesitated for one second but than blasted the ball in the net. It was 3-1 at half time and in the second half we were a bit less focused especially in the finishing. All though Gremio didn’t create any opportunities or shots by themselves we started to give them some and escaped a possible penalty against us. In the last 15 minutes Charles scored two goals after good build up play from the midfield to make the final score 5-1 ! It was a great game from the Lions and a well deserved victory !

Up next will be “El Classico” versus the Shooters 1500 PM at Waigaoqiao.

Lets all come to the training to keep this momentum / As well bring the membership fee if you have not done so as we have to pay all the League Fees this week !

SIFL opening tournament Young Lions team exit at quarters !

it seemed hard on the day to get a full Lions squad out but it gave playing opportunity to new players and very young players ! Simon suddenly realized he was the oldest Lion on the pitch as long as the President himself didn’t enter of course….! The rain stopped and the start looked promising beating Voodoo Child 2-1 in the second game we beat H stone the new first division team 3-0 next up was 3united and again a good performance with solid defense 2-0 victory. Last in the group stage were the Anzacs and although we were already qualified we still managed a 1-0 win. After the break we would either face the Azzurri or the Shooters and we knew it woud be a different game. It was the Shooters with a 16 players squad vs our 8 youngster. Beforehand we explained about the physical tactics of the Shooters and it proved to be hard for us especially on the wings the Shooters found space and came close a few times / They clinched the 1-0 after we failed to mark our players after that it was the Lions pushing forwards and came closest by a free kick which was saved by Chris Banner. Despite the disappointment afterwards we did gain valuable experience !
