Shanghai Lions FC players regroup after SIFL and SPL defeats in April 2012

Lions Remain Empty-Handed After Two Tough Matches

⚽ [SIFL] Shanghai Lions FC 0–1 Shanghai Shooters

It was a tough Saturday for the Lions. Our injury list was already long, and when Thomas pulled his hamstring during warm-up, our match plan was turned upside down. Meanwhile, Mus, Dani, and FL chose to battle with a taxi driver instead of warming up… not ideal.

Thankfully, Chris stepped up as emergency goalkeeper, and we kicked off with grit. I asked for character, and the team delivered. We played with composure and intensity in the first half, pushing forward and keeping possession. The score remained 0–0 at the break.

Both Allan and Nicolas limped off during the match. The Shooters, who barely created anything, managed to scrape one lucky goal after a missed cross bounced off the crossbar, allowing Peter Rosselli to head in the winner.

Stat line: The Shooters had only one corner and two shots on target the entire match.
Our team deserved at least a point — if not more.
Kudos to everyone who fought until the final whistle.

📌 Rosselli was awarded Man of the Match, but for us, the collective effort despite setbacks spoke louder. We now shift our focus to the Cup, and I’m confident we can win it!

🦅 [SPL] Hawks 2–0 Shanghai Lions FC

On Sunday, it felt like we were facing Shanghai Shenhua, not the Hawks. They fielded a completely different side from last week — only two foreign players, and the rest unfamiliar faces.

Despite this, we started strong with better possession and several chances. But they punished us with a counterattack goal to go 1–0 up. In the second half, we pushed harder and had two clear chances, but missed both.

The Hawks had three counters in total and scored two. That efficiency hurt.
It’s rare to see a Lions match where we don’t score, but it happens. We fought until the end and never gave up.

After the match, we regrouped at Latina for a cold beer and to say goodbye to Max, who is off to Bangkok. Max—thanks for all your saves and dedication over the years. We’ll miss you between the posts!

🏆 What’s Next

These results confirm we are out of the championship race in both leagues. The focus now is clear:
Win the Cups.
We’ll field our strongest teams and go all-in to reach the finals.

To become champions again, we need stronger commitment:

  • Show up to training (on time!)

  • Prioritize the 8 key matches per season and make yourself available for them

Next weekend we face Voodoo and the Cowboys — and I want us to score loads of goals. Every one of them will feel sweet, guaranteed.

🎮 Good luck as well in tonight’s Monday Fantasy League Final!

Cheers,
Freek
