Lions Veterans Clinch the 2012 Shanghai Masters Title!
The Shanghai Lions Veteran team kicked off their season with a bang, capturing the prestigious Shanghai Masters 2012 title on September 2nd. This over-35 tournament, widely considered China’s premier veterans’ competition, saw nine elite teams battling it out over two grueling days at the Waigaoqiao Sports Complex.
Day One: Fighting Back from the Brink Things didn’t start as planned for the Lions. Two poor displays put their qualification for the final group in jeopardy. With heads low and bags nearly packed, coach Jamie’s halftime rallying cry made the difference: “Lions, we need to win this next game or we’re out!” The team responded like true champions, stringing together four consecutive victories and securing a spot in the Cup group on Sunday.
Day Two: Total Football and Penalty Drama On Sunday, the Lions played some of their finest football. They reached the final undefeated, conceding just one goal in five matches. Facing their old rivals, the Shanghai Shooters, the Lions needed a win to qualify for the final – and a thunderous volley from FL, playing his rookie Masters season, sealed a 1-0 win.
The final was a true battle of attrition. After falling behind 0-1 to a superb strike from the Shooters’ ex-China national striker, the Lions clawed back with a well-placed goal by Fred to make it 1-1. The trophy would be decided on penalties. In a fitting send-off match, long-time Lions goalkeeper Thomas saved a crucial spot-kick, and Felipe converted the winner to bring the Lions their second Shanghai Masters title!
Massive credit goes to the entire squad, including coach Jamie, and we wish a quick recovery to Gerald and Mikael, who picked up injuries during the weekend.
One thing is for sure: The Lions Veterans are still roaring!
