Seniors Draw 2-2 with Anzacs in a Match of Missed Chances

Last Saturday felt like summer in Shanghai, with temperatures reaching nearly 30°C and two water breaks needed during the match. With several senior players unavailable, we were fortunate to be joined by several Lions Legends who stepped up to support the squad.

First Half: Missed Opportunities and a Punishing Counter

We kicked off with a mixed squad of youth and experience, but the opening phase of the game was played in slow motion—likely due to the heat. After 20 minutes, we started creating real chances.

Charlie broke through on goal but sent the ball flying into orbit. Eworo came close with a header from a corner, only to be denied by a spectacular save from the Anzacs’ keeper. Lolo surged forward and provided a perfect assist to Pierre, who—uncharacteristically—shot wide in disbelief.

Eventually, we broke the deadlock after a scramble in the box, taking a 1-0 lead.

But as football often goes, when you miss chances, the opponent will make you pay. The Anzacs capitalized on a sloppy buildup and punished us with two quick goals—one from an interception and another from a well-placed strike. We went into halftime trailing 2-1.

Second Half: Pressure Without the Finish

We came out with a renewed sense of urgency in the second half and dominated the game. Unfortunately, we lost Leo to an ankle injury after a strong challenge, but the team stayed focused.

Despite the Anzacs having no shots on target besides their two goals, we struggled to find the final touch. Eventually, Charlie made up for his earlier miss and calmly slotted home the equalizer with 10 minutes to go.

We pushed hard for the winner, but it just wasn’t our day. Final score: 2-2.

Though we didn’t secure all three points, we showed resilience and teamwork under challenging conditions. After the match, we wrapped up the day with a solid team photo to capture the fighting spirit.

Let’s regroup and aim for a win in our next game. Let’s go Lions!

Cheers,
Freek
