SIFL Cup 2012 – Shanghai Lions 8-0 Shanghai Krauts at Waigaoqiao.

🏆 SIFL Cup 2012-13: Lions Thrash Krauts 8-0 in Qualifier

On a cold and uninspiring Saturday at Waigaoqiao, the Shanghai Lions showed up with fire in their bellies despite the puzzling requirement to play a SIFL Cup qualifying round—a scenario all the more ridiculous given that we were the defending champions of the very same cup.

🦁 Motivation Despite the Chill

There were no spectators, strong winds, and not much at stake—yet the Lions were up for it. In the opening minutes, the Krauts had two golden chances to open the scoring, but squandered both. From that point forward, they never managed to recover their footing, despite tactical attempts—including a Mourinho-style regroup—from their coach Stöckl.

In contrast, the Lions embraced the game with a festive spirit (and a surprise appearance from ZZ-Top on the sidelines). The tone was set by a clever short corner in the first half, leading to a flying header from the shortest man on the pitch—Jonny “Hobbit” O. —leaving everyone in awe and securing a 2-0 halftime lead.

🎁 Lions Share the Scoring Love

The second half became a goal fest, with the Krauts putting the white flag up early. The Lions took full advantage, with nearly half the squad getting on the scoresheet.

🤷 Why Were We Even Playing?

The question lingered: What were we even playing for? Regardless, credit goes to the team for showing up, staying focused, and delivering an 8-goal statement. This kind of mentality is what sets the Lions apart and keeps our sights firmly set on silverware.

Cheers,
Coach Freek
