Bitter Defeat for the SPL Lions
Everyone arrived on time for this decisive top-of-the-table clash against Marlins FC—one of the most important SPL matches of the season. Both teams needed a win to stay in the title race.
⚔️ First Half: A Physical Battle
Our game plan was to play physical and minimize corners and set pieces, knowing that Marlins are dangerous in those areas. From the early challenges, it was clear they were going to play very aggressively. That seemed to suit Kevin (the referee), who let a lot of contact go unpunished. No problem—Lions can play that style too.
In the opening 20 minutes, we looked like the more cohesive and composed team. Michael, our very own Kansas Lion, opened the scoring with a brilliant header off a corner. A second goal followed before halftime, thanks to a gift from a Marlins defender, giving us a solid 2-0 lead at the break. We were in control.
⚠️ Second Half: Shift in Momentum
Marlins came out pressing hard and were rewarded with a goal after a good run down the right. Still, we didn’t panic. Jack, feeling confident, took charge of free kicks and delivered a perfect cross for our young and talented Martin to score a fantastic third goal. At 3-1, things looked very good for the Lions.
Then came a turning point: Kevin awarded a penalty for what was clearly a foul outside the box—a decision that felt like daylight robbery. That goal shifted the momentum completely.
Marlins, now energized, began winning every 50/50 ball. They equalized, and then with 10 minutes to go, scored the winner. Despite a few late chances, we couldn’t come back.
Final score: [ SPL ] Marlins FC 4-3 Shanghai Lions
